Hello 990 friends!

I'm writing to ask if anyone has any experience with these headphones, the AKG K701 and the 990?

From what I've read, I'm pulled toward botht the Senn 650's and the K701's, which are available for about the same price, on ebay.

Any and all information appreciated.

thanks,

John

AKG makes some of the finest mics, as you probably know. While I don't know specifically about the K701 I bought several less expensive 240s, which are quite good, so the 701 is likely very good, too.

However the finest headphones I have ever used are STAX phones...and I checked and there are several on ebay. You would need a small amp. I use a Crown D40 to power the box. They are as transparent as I've ever experienced.

Please let us know your opinion about the 701s if you buy them.

Oooops I forgot to mention: Using dynamic phones with 1/4 inch TRS jack will mute the speakers, if I remember correctly. I feed the STAX/Crwon D40 from zone 2 outputs. So if I want to listen to music or watch TV with others who want something else I can do that. Very option-oriented 990.

nfaguys,

I know the AKG K701's are good head phones, given all the postive reviews, which put them on about par with the Senn 650's. There are differences between the two and I was just wondering if anyone had experience with these married to the 990?

Also, I was under the impression that the 990 has its own head phone amp. Will it not suffice to drive these head phones? It works fine with my old Sony MDR CD550's.

Or, are you saying you use a separate amp, with your phones, in a separate room?

Thanks,

John

The 990 not only can power the 'phones, but imparts several algorithms. This is when you plug inot the headphoone jack. My need for separate amp is because I'm driving the STAX, which has its own power supply and requires to be driven.

I didn't mean to confuse the issue. Just giving another option (Zone-2) which allows for more enjoyment by wife, kids, me at same time.

The reason nfaguys can't use the 990's front panel headphone jack to drive his Stax phones is that they are electrostatic, not dynamic: hence their separate power supply. I'd like a pair but they are WAY outside my budget limits. My Signet phones have sounded great with the 990 on stereo material; I haven't tried any of the HT settings. Maybe I will now.

Psyprof1 is correct, though it isn't that I can't, but rather that I don't want to use the front headphone jack.

Here's an example on ebay. STAX ON EBAY

So far priced OK. 8 bids. Several days remaining.
There is another also. Type STAX into the ebay search box, if interested.

I see, now I understand.

Yes, the price is certainly right, but I already have vintage head phones: Sony MDR CD550's.

The Senn 650's and AKG K701's are available, on ebay, for $280; that's not too bad, given the years of life a pair can have.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the Sony's, Senn's or AKG's. The only reason for zone 2 and headphones is to separate listening from the other people in the living room....and BECAUSE I CAN smile
