Moving to the component output of the cable box would resolve the issue with (based on the cable boxes I've used with my HDTV) no loss in picture quality, although if those are your only two sources I can see where using the 970's DVI switching could be a definite convenience (if the cable box would behave itself). HDCP really can be a pain...
