I'd use any of the analog inputs (except probably the phono). The front could be convenient, assuming you aren't using it for other things - in my system, the front input is assigned to a digital audio input. I had a cable connected to my tape input for use with an iPod for a long time, and I cranked the player's volume up fairly high then used the 990's volume control for fine tuning.
