There may be some merit there
if he plans to get into Blu-ray or HD-DVD. For HD cable, HD satellite, and DVD, there's no compelling reason to wait for HDMI. And if he's already looking at an AVM30 and his budget supports it, he could also move up to an AVM40 and have HDMI v1.1 today.
