Since posting my question I've successfully tried playing an HD-DVD as well and an SD DVD on the XA2 through the 990 up to the projector. The SD disc up converts with no HDCP errors.

I was only able to get Optical audio working. couldn't seem to simply configure the analog audio and get it to work. I guess I'm headed back down to the HT to try tweaking both the player settings and the 990 settings.
