That is the indicator that tells you the main zone is enabled. If you hold down either mute button (remote or front panel) for several seconds (3 to 5, depending on whether you're using the remote or the front panel), the 990 will shut down the main zone and turn on the headphone output. When that happens, the red speaker indicator will disappear and your speakers will go silent.
