I am confused about using the 990 for 5.1 sound. When I used the AutoSetup feature it discovered that there were only 5 speakers (no SR & SL) and according to page 29 of the manual the back surround channels will be disabled - which they are. So...can I not use the 990 for 5.1? Do I have to buy two more speakers to enjoy HDTV and 5.1 sound or is there a way around this? If not....why not?

I figured it out - It has been so long since I upgraded my HT setup I did not know the difference between Surround Speakers and Surround Back Speakers. The sound is much better after having switched the cables.

Rookie mistake....

You can use the 990 for 5.1. I am confused though that the 990 did not find SL/SR speakers. It should have found these, but not the SBL/SBR (surround back) speakers. If what you staed above is correct, you need to move the SBL/SBR preouts to the SL/SR preouts. The 990 will support 5.1 with no issues whatsoever.

Was typing as you replyed. You are correct in your discovery however.
