Noticed that when I changed from DTS from DD the signal switched over fine but the volume was much lower. Had to turn the volume up conciderably. Could this be a problem or is this normal Thanks in advance.

Haven't noticed it on all dvds with both formats, but yes many of the discs I have also demonstrate this, (dts is "louder" than DD). No big deal, that's what the volume control is for, (ha,ha).

Yes, unfortunately, DTS does often record with their levels too high. This frequently leads the naive into thinking that DTS sounds "better" because of a psychoacoustic phenomenon where, with all other factors being equal, the louder sound is perceived as "better".

The reason is Dialog normalization which is part of DD's encoding/decoding scheme.
The typical offset is 4db but could be as much as 7db depends on the DD encoding.
Sony/Columbia and MGM are especially use this with great liberty in the wrong way.
