I think it's fairly common. My 1050 was paired up with a Model 750 amp for about half of the time I had it in my system (little over a year and a half). The pre-amp outputs work just fine. The sound from the 1050 as a pre-amp is not quite on the same level as the 950, but it is still quite respectable.
