I've never had a problem with battery life and what you're experiencing definitely sounds fishy, so I'll toss out one somewhat unlikely "environmental" explanation before I assume it's a defect in the remote: does the backlight stay on for an unusually long time (mine only stays on for a few seconds after a button is pushed), or do you have any pets or kids around that might find it fun to sit on the remote or push buttons to look at the backlight? (Yes, I do have a kitten at home ) Heavy backlight use would certainly shorten the battery life. Otherwise, from what you describe I'd begin to suspect a problem somewhere in the remote.
