Are you thinking of the B&K AVR307 as an alternative to the 1050? As you can see from the features and specs here , the two are very different. The 307 offers more power in its amp section and a wider assortment of inputs, but the 1050 offers similar surround processing and a very impressive (most agree under-rated) amp section for a lot less. Unfortunately, I haven't heard the 307 to know how it stacks up to the 1050 -- as the 307 is essentially a B&K Ref 30 converted into a receiver, one would hope that the 307 would offer better sound (of course, the addition of the amp to the Ref 30's chassis may have compromised things quite a bit), but the question is do you want to pay that much more money for the sound alone?

The 1050 is a very impressive unit, especially if you are on a budget. I'm not sure what sort of stuff you are wanting it to handle, but it is well suited to most "typical" small AV rooms.
