It's likely that you've got a setting issue on the DirecTV box or are using different processing modes. Make sure DirecTV is outputting Dolby Digital and not internally downmixing to stereo (which it might do poorly).
My Direct TV box has both optical and digital coaxial outputs. I switched out the coaxial for a optical and the problem is fixed.
Could be the cable I thought was a coaxial digital cable was instead a video cable ?The cable is colored in between a yellow and orange.( just an old cable I dug up )
I will need to purchase another optical or digital cable, my question is, should their be that much difference if any, in the quality of sound between the two. Having just recently purchased an optical cable from radio shack for $25 , I'd rather not have to go that route.
