It's a phono preamp. The only thing left to make the 950 and the 1050 totally compatible with all formats. Well, minus 8-track.
My other guess is that it's an outboard DAC that downsamples all audio to lowest quality MP3 for posting on the internet. (That is supposed to be humorous )
