Mr D, I have the same problem as you. My rear surround is 4' away, and my side surrounds are 7' away. I followed Sanjay's advice, and have been very happy with the results. I can't tell you how many times I've been watching a movie and almost gotten off the couch to look out the window to find out where that sound came from
