I would expect that the phono stage is similar if not identical to the one in the RR2150 which I think is also the same as the 990 processor. Both have been noted in reviews to be very good.

I believe that the phono stage in the 2150 is well regarded. I have a hard time believing that the 2160 wouldn't, at the very least, match it for quality.

I've been eyeing the 2160 since hearing about it. I had ruled out the 2150 in the past due to its lack of the digital connectivity that is now included on the 2160. Currently using a Marantz AVR (SR6003) as a 2 channel preamp running a Adcom GFA-5500 200 watts per channel @8ohms//350 watts per channel @4ohms. The Marantz' DAC is doing the conversion from my digital source. I'm running pure direct so I run the preouts through the 80Hz crossover in my sub and back out to the amp so the amp & speakers don't get the full low bass.

I wonder if I'd be happy replacing the Marantz/Adcom setup with the 2160? Thoughts!!

Cadboy64, I'm in a similar boat as you as I'm very happy with Rotel RA-12, but have always wondered/hoped that having an integrated amp with full sub-management, would improve my overall sound by not having to drive my GoldenEar Aon 3's with a full range of sound. Now that the Outlaw 2160 has more digital connectivity (streaming, HD Radio, etc...) I decided to order it and compare it head to head with my Rotel. I really hope that it can sounds at least as good as my Rotel (hopefully better), while adding the new features too. I'll let you know what I think once it arrives and I get it up and running.

If the meantime, if anyone can offer some more comparisons with the 2160 that they have done, I think there is a lot of interest in real world experiences in this forum.

Stach,

Any updates on the 2160? Have you even received it yet?

Cadboy64, yes it has and I've had about 1 week to play around with it. I've been trying to do some A/B comparisons with my Rotel, but that's too slow of a process (2 minutes to swap all the cables and adjust the sub) for an instant switching comparison (which I would prefer to make the best comparison). It also has taken some time to tune the subwoofer as I've discovered that while my Rotel sounded best with a 0 degree phase, the Outlaw needs the exact opposite, 180 degree phase, which took me a while to figure out (as well as volume and filter frequency).

Positives about the Outlaw RR2160 vs. my Rotel (these are not major improvements, but minor in scale....but still valued)
- Bigger soundstage as the sound extends further outside of the speakers
- Better imaging and distinct placement of voices / instruments
- Subtly better detail with a more neutral sound (the Rotel is slightly on the warm side)
- The bass management is wonderful and really provides great flexibility in tuning / refining the bass to get the best detail

Negatives about the Outlaw:
- Internet streaming audio is virtually useless, as you have to go through so many selections and clicks to find / tune a station, with NO way to save a favorite as a preset. The small display just isn't made to find, tune and listen to 1000's of stations easily. The Outlaw desperately needs a phone, tablet or web app to control this.
- When no music is playing, a slight hum can be heard coming from the transformers in my smallish office 11'x14'. I haven't really tried to isolate the issue yet as it is minor and even in the quietest music passages, you can't hear it, but it's there. Both the amp and sub are plugged into the same CyberPower UPS, so I will try going around that as well as moving the RCA wire connection to the sub.

Question:
Does anyone else hear any hum coming from the transformers when no music is playing?

Let me know if you have any questions.

Many times the cable TV/Satellite connection is a different ground plane than the rest of the system and can cause the hum. Attach a small wire from the cable box to the 976 chassis using one of the screws.

The hum is from my new RR2160. Here are the connections that it has (no antennas connected yet):

Power:
- I have only the RR2160 and SVS sub connected to a CyberPower UPS

Audio:
- Digital Coax connection to my hires media player
- Cat 5e network cable
- Single RCA cable from sub output to SVS sub
- Speakers connected

Unfortunately I can't switch to Optical Digital cables/input as they are limited to 24/96 and I have 24/192 music

So the hum is internal to the 2160 or is it coming from your speakers?

This type of hum is usually from DC on the AC line. Try turning off any lights, one at a time in the area to see if one of them is the culprit. I'd start with any desktop lighting, or stand-alone lighting fixtures.
