Some years ago I purchased the Outlaw 950/770 combo to run a 5.1 system and subsequently upgraded the 950 to the Marantz SR5005 to run a 7.2 system which has been in place for at least 6 years.

In some ways the Marantz is overkill as I don't utilize its amp ability and I have found that running hdmi from my bluray player through the Marantz to my overhead projector (I have a long run-30 feet and use redmere hdmi that boosts the signal) often leads to intermittent signal loss. I have solved the problem by buying a bluray player with 2 hdmi outputs, 1 directly to the projector for video and 1 to the Marantz for sound.

The Marantz itself seemed overcomplicated with a manual that was not easy to fathom.

My questions is: How much would be gained by exchanging my Marantz for the new 975 (maybe 976). It is certainly more compact with up-to-date electronics and sound processing. It's pricing is quite reasonable but what is the gain?

My current system is the Outlaw 770 amp, the Sr5005 used as a pre-amp (purchased from Outlaw), 2 SVS PC12+ subs, Pinnacle gold reference tower, center and 4 rear/side speakers. I have both the Sony ES40 overhead projector and a 50" Panasonic plasma.

Running dual displays the M-976 would seem to be the better choice due to having two HDMI outputs. I am not sure how one would go about the cabling associated with a single HDMI output to dual displays.

Thanks for the response. If you mean by dual displays for my current set up I have a separate older DVD player for the plasma and as far as TV output I utilize a Tivo which has an hdmi output and a component output-one to each display. I just upgraded to a Tivo Bolt that has only one output (hdmi) that goes to my TV. I output this to my plasma. I may try to input this to the SR5005 and use its hdmi output to the TV and its component output to my projector.

I could not speak to the hook ups for your Marantz so have no advice for you there.

Running the either the M-975 or the M-976 everything wants to connect to the Outlaw then out via HDMI to the display. Displays in your case.

If it were me and the price is not an issue I would wait for the M-976 for the dual HDMI out, added inputs, and updated format compliances.

I do not know what might exist for HDMI switches but it might be possible to run a single HDMI out to a switch that could then output to either your TV or projector. I could see hand shake as well as HDCP issues when using a switch but could be wrong. Someone else could give better advice on switches than can I

Thanks for your response. I think I will wait for the 976 (late spring) and then call Outlaw to answer specific questions. In the meantime I will physically switch my current hdmi cable from the bluray cable to the TIVO and back as necessary.

Can I use the 2 hdmi outputs of the 976 to send each one either the bluray or TIVO signals? Will the new unit do a better job of forwarding signals to the overhead projector with its long cable run than the Marantz? When I originally set up the Marantz SR5005 I called Outlaw concerning the weakened signal and their response was they could not guarantee anything over 15-20 feet. I purchased an expensive 35 foot hdmi cable and there still was signal loss.

Only when went directly from my Bluray to the projector did signal loss problems end. Will I have better luck with the 976?

We have not yet seen the manual for the 976 but it seems reasonable to expect that anything run through the processor should output through either HDMI out. From what I have read thus far the 976 should suit your needs well.

I did a quick search and found several HDMI extenders. I have no idea how well they might work.

Was the cable you purchased one of those with active chip set built into it? Something like one of these? I think you need something like that with longer HDMI runs.

I don't think you will be able to use either 976 output to feed your Tivo or Bluray unless the BDP has an HDMI input. As for how the 976 will respond to longer HDMI cables it is any ones guess, but the HDMI spec is probably pretty specific about the voltage able to be applied at the output of any device. I bought a 30 foot Redmere cable from Monoprice and it works perfectly over that distance. It is only a 10.2 GBPS cable but works well for 1080P. Once the new 4K and HDR devices are common the cables will have to support a much higher data throughput so they will become...
a) more expensive
b) less reliable
c) more subject to snake oil possibilities.

I had read his post to mean he wanted to know if the HDMI outputs would have full access to all of the inputs.

Thanks again for the responses. The redmere cable (35 foot length) does have internal chips to boost the signal and it is working well to my overhead projector (SONY 40ES) but it goes directly from the output of my Panasonic bluray player. In theory, if I run the output from my bluray to the pre-amp and then from the pre-amp to the projector I would imagine the total distance is the sum of the 2 cables plus whatever is lost within the pre-amp. I would hate to buy the 976 only to learn that the signal is still too wea when it arrives at the projector and have to send it back.

Currently neither my TV or projector is 4K but I am upgrade the TV in a couple of years (it is about 9 years old) to 4 K but it is quite close to the TIVO which actually provides an HDMI cable made for 4K output.
