Dear Fellow Outlaws,

Ten years ago we introduced the Model 7125. At 7 x 125 watts per channel, this remarkable amplifier took its place as our best-selling product. Praised by both consumers and reviewers alike, the 7125 continues to power thousands of home theater systems and remains a "keeper" as new surround processors come and go.
However, like everything else in our industry, there are new advancements in the world of high performance amplifiers. Since January, we have been quietly working on the successor to the 7125.

INTRODUCING THE NEW MODEL 7140
Our goal for this amplifier: increased power, improved performance, greater reliability, and an enhanced user experience.

Class AB or Class D?

To answer your question up front, unlike some manufacturers who have made the switch to Class D amplifiers, we have chosen to remain with Class AB amplifier designs for our multi-channel power amps.
Indeed, we have auditioned a number of fairly good Class-D designs. While they offer some advantages, such as size and shipping weight, after several prolonged listening sessions we all concluded that to our ears, there is still something that remains intangibly smoother when audio is reproduced with Class AB amplification.

POWER
The new 7140 delivers 7 x 140 watts per channel into 8 ohms (all-channels driven), and 7 x 225 watts into 4 ohms.

Connectivity
In addition to RCA connectors, the 7140 also offers XLR inputs utilizing special IC's offered by THAT Corporation, which allow for superb performance via a balanced input stage.

NEW ADVANCED TRANSFORMER
All of this performance and connectivity has been engineered into a chassis which is the same size as the original 7125. To increase the power, and maintain the same chassis size, we needed a new power supply that would deliver significantly more output voltage and current. To solve this, we chose a recently developed Class F transformer that utilizes professional grade insulation and has a greater thermal efficiency.

A NEW TURN-ON SYSTEM
Traditionally, we have used thermistors to delay amplifier turn-on and reduce any side-effects caused by an in-rush of current. Since we are now dealing with connections for both RCAs and XLRs (controlled by the THAT circuitry), we improved upon this system to ensure there will be no audible pops, thumps or other side effects until the high powered signal has fully settled in.

Totally New amplifier modules
We are using new output devices with higher voltage and current for increased power and reduced distortion. Each of the amplifier modules has three pairs of newly designed output devices. This use of perfectly matched devices (the pairs) delivers greatly improved DC offest. The result: lower distortion and smoother operation.

In summary, the new 7140 represents our best thinking in an affordable high-performance Class AB amplifier. It enters the market at $1099.
