is it better to just connect my "new to me" Oppo BDP-83 Blu-Ray directly (VIA HDMI) to my HDTV???...

I always seem to be a bit behind the curve and this new Blu-Ray just replaced to another room my Oppo DVP-971...(that replaced a Toshiba SD-3950)...

...previous I had this connected to my Outlaw 1050 which has been replaced with my Outlaw 1070...I just kept hooking these players, DVD to Outlaw to TV...I received the BDP-83 last night and checked here and found a review from gonk (always helping those of us in need cool) where...if I understood correctly...he suggested hooking the BDP-83 directly to my Sony KDF-50E2000 older rear screen projection...I have the hook ups and it seems to work...I realize I can only get 720P (or the inferior I think, 1080i) but it looks great...

...I guess what I'm asking is am i getting the best I can get within the parameters of my current gear or am I missing something not taking the Oppo though the Outlaw 1070?...

Thanks for any experience you care to share...

Bill

I'd suggest checking out this page[/ur], specifically the [url=ht...nd BDP-83" link that describes optimal setup of the BDP-83 with a Model 970 or Model 1070. You definitely want to use HDMI out from the player to your TV - you can use the 1070's DVI switching if you have another DVI or HDMI source, but if you don't need the switching I'd vote in favor of simplicity and just run straight to the TV. For audio, the coaxial connection will work fine for CD and DVD, but for Blu-ray you should probably connect the multichannel analog output - a connection that you might even use for CD and DVD if you like how it sounds, because the BDP-83's analog section is really quite good.

If your RPTV will accept both 720p and 1080i, I would suggest trying both and picking the one you prefer. If the projector's native resolution is 720p (or 768), 720p may win out over 1080i, but it's worth experimenting with to see which you like most.

gonk...you ARE a MACHINE!...thanks...I have done the 720p and 1080i back and forth and believe the 720p looks a bit better...but I keep an open mind...

I also will try the multichannel analog section...it was just that word Analog that made me think the Coax (digital) would be better...excellent and thanks...AGAIN!

The analog is important in this case because of the audio formats supported by the BDP-83 that cannot be output over coaxial or optical. In addition to DVD-Audio (which gets downmixed to stereo) and SACD (which is restricted from any digital output over coaxial and optical), there are three lossless audio formats available on Blu-ray (uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio) that require more bandwidth than coaxial and optical provide. Multichannel PCM gets downmixed to stereo for coaxial, while TrueHD and DTS-HD MA either get downmixed to stereo or use a lossy (Dolby Digital or DTS) "core" track depending on how the player is configured. For those five formats, the multichannel analog is the "purest" option.
