A friend of mine has Integra 9.8 pre-pro. He tells me that with HDMI connection while running a DVD-A when he turned off the TV the audio disappeared. Turn on TV audio returns.

Questions:
1. Is this typical of HDMI?
2. If no, is this a problem with Integra?
3. If yes, will this be a problem with 997/
Thanks. I'll try to get him registered and maybe he'll write.

1. It depends on the interaction between components.

2. We need to know every component in his system: source component and display as well as processor. With my 885 (same platform as the 9.8) I can turn my TV off and the BDP-83 will continue to play audio, although it will force a new HDCP handshake and typically re-start the current track.

3. We have no idea, but I do think it's safe to say that it will depend on more than just the 997.

I have asked him to write to this thread, listing his equipment as gonk suggested.

What I was getting at is that I was wondering if anyone else with an Integra has had the same problem. If yes, perhaps that is the source of this (annoying) issue.

There was a point in the BDP-83 beta testing where I had a similar problem (BDP-83 to Onkyo 885 to Sony KDL-40W4100), but for at least the last five months I've been able to turn the TV off and continue to get audio from the BDP-83 via HDMI. It's quite possible that the issue is with the player itself, but identifying exactly where the problem lies can be very difficult. (Let's all say "thank you" to HDCP and give it the one-finger salute!) What your friend might try doing is experimenting with any other HDMI sources in his system - see if audio continues from a cable or satellite box or any other HDMI-equipped source when he turns off the TV.

Of course, you also have to watch out for CEC - I initially had CEC enabled at its highest level in my TV, and when I turned it off it would turn off my BDP-83 and 885.

Gonk, does the BD83 only output dvd-a (sacd?) via the hdmi, or will it output via coax/optical audio or discrete analog? (hdmi won't work with older pre-pro/receivers).

DVD-Audio, SACD, multichannel PCM, DD+, TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are all available via the multichannel analog outputs. That's exactly why it's such a good player for use with non-HDMI processors and receivers.

DVD-A is available from coaxial/optical as downmixed stereo (same as any other DVD-A player). SACD is not available at all (same as any other SACD player except the SACD-capable PS3's). DD+, TrueHD, and both DTS-HD's will output the lossy core DD/DTS track via coaxial/optical (same as any Blu-ray player I am aware of).

I also have an Onkyo 885 . When I am playing audio (SACD or CD) on my PS3 and shut off my tv (older JVC HD-ILA), the audio output on the prepro cuts out for about 3-4 seconds, then returns. This happen at the point the TV fully powers down (cooling fans shuts off), not when I initiate the power down. I do not get a track restart though, as the PS3 ignores the process.

So it sounds like it depends on the source, and the TV as well.

BTW, you can not get the 5.1 mix off of an SACD/PS3 via analog or optical, only stereo. If there is no stereo mix, you get nothing. There was a firmware that gave you a DTS conversion of the 5.1 DSD briefly, but it is long since superceded.
