I know the 997 is not out yet, but I have never heard the outlaw sound before.
So in comparison, has anyone ever heard the 990 in comparison to the 2809?
I am considering the 2809, but as a happy owner of an Outlaw 770 amp I am currently pairing with a Denon 3805, if the 990 is THAT much better, I'd consider waiting and giving the yet to be released 997 a try when ever it gets released.

Thanks for any advice...

I can only tell you that I migrated from a Denon 3801 to a 990/770 combination and the improvement in SQL was dramatic.

I have not owned the 990 but the 970. I went from the 970 to the 2808 as the 970 was getting too glitchy. But aside from that the sound was very good for music and movies. In comparison to the Denon, I could n't say if it was better or worse but rather different. I currently use the 2808 and it works fine/sounds fine. It was an upgrade in terms of connectivity and codecs. All I hear is good things about the 990 from the SN platform. The 970 is a different platform altogether.

I am to understand that Denon should be coming out with a 3810 in a few months. It would be interesting to see how it compares to the 997/972. You asked for advice, I would wait until it is released before making any decisions to go with the 2809. The 3805 is a great (but dated) machine. If it still works you have the advantage of time to make a decision. In may case, the 970 was just too glitchy as it got older - the sounds emitting when switching sources via the speakers was really annoying so I was left with few choices at the time. Of course I will be interested in what SN/Outlaw have to offer in the near future.

Thanks to all for your responses!
Interesting that Denon is coming out with a 3810 in a few months. I did not know that. Now I'll definitely be looking into that prospect!
Thankfully my 3805 is working great, so there is no rush to make a move.
The way things are crawling along from a release stand point, I could be waiting till mid summer to get a pre-pro or receiver.

I went from the 990 to the 2807 because I needed HDMI audio/video switching capability. I don't use the amplifier section of the 2807--I just connect the preouts to my Outlaw 7700 amp. The sound quality is OK but maybe it's just my ears... the sound isn't quite as rich as the 990's was. (Maybe it's just not quite properly tweaked... who knows.)

One thing I definitely do NOT like about the 2807 is a lack of balanced outputs. Now, I know a lot of people claim that balanced outputs make no difference, but they definitely make a HUGE difference in my house. I have a lot of dimmers that cause a terrible bzzzzzzzzzz on my monitors that I never had when the 990 was connected to the 7700 via balanced outputs.

The moment the 997 is available I'm selling my 2807 on e-Bay. In this economy I oughta be able to get @$200 for it. frown
