Wow...great system!

Between front projection and plasma, I'm starting to lean towards front projection. The Sanyo PLV-Z2, a brand new LCD fp, just got an amazing review for a $2000 projector. Just think about it, a beautiful 96" wide picture to salivate with the wonderful sound I'm sure your M&K's provide.

M&K subs with a Buttkicker; I'm major league jealous!

seems like you have spend a lot of money on everything but the tv. i would not really recommened front projectors to most people, but there are a few new technologies all vying (sp?) for the "best" title. i would like to see how lcos (liquid crystal on silicon) pans out, alledgedly it is going to address most of the problems with regualr liquid crystal which is in and of itself pretty good. i have not seen any lcos sets yet or i could offer some more insight. i agree with the nice system, m&k subs are nice, and not that i want to criticize, because i dont, but there are some other subs out there that would turn yours into stands or subs for the fronts only (ht use). how do you have your 3 centers setup? how do you like your rotel processor? i am still looking for the answer to my processing desires, but things change very quickly these days with technological advances, etc.; so i am finding it hard to spend over a few grand for a processor that i know is going to be outdated much more quickly than they used to be. hopefully manufacturers will realize that times in audio have changed and there are no more times where things will be the same for 10years, so they need to make either a fully upgradeable product or ones that are inexpensive enough to replace. who wants to spend 10k on a processor every few years...? thats why companies like outlaw are nice and why i support them.

Curegeorg,

You seem to have a lot of opinions on various forum subjects. But, are you going to answer Wayne Carlton's question regarding the brand and model of subwoofer(s) you own.

yeah, sorry i cant read everything instantly. right now i have velodyne hgs-II 18 (5). three of which are on semi-permanent loan. this is in my home theatre. i dont generally like to state the exact components in my system, kind of seems like bragging and i dont care to defend any of my choices as far as my equipment goes. but since i kind of criticized wayne, i guess its only fair in this circumstance.

curegeorg,

Did you say 5 HGS 18'S........OUCH your neigbors must love you...lol I wish I lived close enough to come over and hear that So how are those subs anyway? In the future when money allows Velodyne is the way I Plan to go. Are they really as earth shaking as I've read in the reviews?

yes they are very nice, the nicest ive heard. the theatre is isolated, so you cant hear it elsewhere under normal levels. velodyne has replaced the hgs-II with a digital drive series, that adds a calibration mic and a few settings, same drivers/amp though. 1 would be enough for most rooms, they are thx ultra2 rated. i could use just 2, but im not paying to use the other 3 so why not.

Wayne,

Wheee! You and I have the same model equalizer and RTAs! Any tips for equalization that you'd care to share? My attempts to equalize my room have historically been disasterous, so recently, I've left my Bijou in bypass mode ....

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for the great suggestions. Like yours, my system is top-notch, but alas, I have bad acoustics in my room that drives me crazy. My gear includes nice pieces like the Lexicon MC-12 and the Aerial 10Ts, so don't think it's the gear that's causing the trouble, but the room.

I've played around with crossovers and placement, but in particular, I have a lot of trouble with dialog intelligibility. (My system's, that is, not mine! )

I agree with your philosophy of only cutting, never adding. I've only added on rare circumstances; I try to cut whenever possible.

Here, here's a specific question for you: how long is "long enough" to get a good measurement on Slow on the RTA? Is ten seconds long enough, or should it be longer?

I'm going to check the THX web page and see if they have a PDF of the guide you mention.

Thanks again for the suggestions! You da man!

Jeff

Yeah something like that, i dont work for any manufacturer though...

As far as my comments in another column about 1 sub, i stick by my comments that 1 great sub is better than 2 of lesser quality. i have a very large room, which sometimes needs more (which i said also) than 1. there is some misconception that two subs is always better than 1, and that is not true. wayne since you are extremely into thx i would assume that you know that though.

Subs - downward vs. forward firing?
If you were referring to that post in that forum. I have more than 1 setup. Thanks wayne.

you hadnt said that you stacked them, up to this point... every situation is different, however i always try to post in general terms, unless i have used/seen what the person is trying to do.

i am not aware of any manufacturers of speakers that "break-in" their products. however you would be remiss to think that a day old speaker will sound the same as the same speaker day x. perhaps the surrounds are not as durable therefore they showed a more dramatic difference during your testing. anyway, i had another point but i forgot it.

well my point was that the components in different speaker models/lines/production runs can vary slightly so that you can see a difference in one set of speakers but not any of the rest. i.e. some speakers can "break-in" more noticeably while others appear the same.
thanks for explaining bipole/dipole/tripole for me, however i was already aware of the differences, and i think what you experienced has little to do with the speakers being of that nature and more to do with the components of each. in a perfect world one could find a whole set of speakers that matched each other perfectly forever and lasted forever and sounded the same forever, but unfortunately things change with time. on the other side of that, sometimes things change for the better instead of worse, i prefer the sound of my system now much more than when i first got it (not all at the same time, but in relation to new vs now condition at least). hopefully your speakers dont continue to keep changing dramatically or i presume that could become bothersome very quickly.

it is always a good idea to "check" your equipment every so often to ensure everything is where you prefer it to be. the significant other can push some buttons when she gets confused and you notice that something isnt quite the same, but cant put your finger on it. or better yet decide to move your speakers so she can clean around them and then you notice one day that they are all out of place. not that i get that anymore, but in other houses where space was tighter i did.

NICE!!!

You have my wish list speaker system. That is the same set up that I picked out for my Pop when I helped him put in his Home Theatre. I just did not have the $4,000 - $5,000 to blow on myself, but they are worth every penny when you are engulfed by machine gun blasts and explosions. He is running them with an Adcom 200W THX Amp and GTP 830 Pre(I am trying to convince him to go with the 950, the GTP 830 is a big time disappointment.

Adcom still makes an awesome Amp, but the Pre-Amp has issues. It has an audible tick when you increase or decrease the volume, it has a slight hiss audible in all channels and now the left channel is not working. He wants to send it to Adcom for repairs, but the 2 year waranty is up and I know they will charge him at least 5 bills to fix it. I told him that the Outlaw is a superior product at half of the price and he could return it in 30 days for a full refund if he is not satisfied. We've used Adcom products since the late 80's/early 90's. Adcom was the Outlaw of its day giving you huge bang for your buck. The music system in my home today still consists of my college dorm system, an Adcom GFA 545 II paired with the GTP 400 Pre-Amp tuner driving a pair of Infinity Kappa 5's and a sub. I have yet to hear a speaker that can match the original Kappa series with the Emit K tweeters for overall dynamics, sound stage and musicality. The GTP 830 is not the Adcom I grew up with, but with my father old loyalties fade hard.

Wayne,

What you are saying is true, however the 830 was the top of Adcoms line in 2002 when I assembled this theatre for my father. Since then they have added the 860 and 890. At the time the series went GTP 750, 760 and THE NEW 830. His amplifier was the 5 channel THX flagship and they do still make a killer amp for the money. I had recomended for him to check out Anthem or Lexicon, but he had such good luck with his old Adcom and M&K music set up from the late 80's, he went with his loyalties. His whole thing was, "Why should I pay that much for companies I do not know when the Adcom equipment has always sounded great to me." I did not know about Outlaw at that time, or I would have steered him that direction.
