Hey folks first time at this forum seems to be a real cool place to talk about our HT equipment.

Ok before I made this new topic I searched the 970 forum for my problems and didn't find exactly what I wanted to know.
ok first I've looked at all these topics in this forum and from my understanding you can't get the OSD to work with component video cables. Well my 970 's OSD works with component cables between the pre/pro and the TV in std. resolution tv. The problem I'm having is with the HD content the OSD will not display until I go back to std.resolution .Does the 970 just not support this or is there something i'm missing?
anyways thanks for the help

Welcome to the saloon, wichita.

As I recall, the 970's video switching does not support overlaying any menu data onto component inputs. It will overlay both setup menu and status information onto s-video and composite video inputs before transcoding those to component video and outputting that component signal to the TV. The manual doesn't specifically touch on it, but it hints that the menu may also be available when viewing component inputs that operate at 480i. I don't have a 970 to test that one, so I'm not entirely sure how it works.

Bottom line: it sounds like your 970 is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Correct. Overlaying the data onto an HD signal without degrading the image takes a lot of video processing horsepower. Omitting that overlay entirely assures that the image quality can be maintained.

thanks for clarifying that gonk what a bummer though its hard enough running a component cable into the attic and through the wall to your tv to realize you have to run another composite cable just for the OSD

Are you trying to get to the OSD for the setup menu? If so, just change inputs to something without HD video (the front input is a guaranteed "sure thing" for this) and you can still access the menu through the component connection.

yeah i know i can just use a unused input for that gonk im talking about while the movie is going on just to check to see what surround mode I'm in or maybe changing to another surround mode to hear what it sounds like(only to not know what surround mode it is lol) so i couldn't do that on another input i would have to be on the input im watching. oh well i guess ill invest in a good telescope to see the front panel lol

wichita,
As gonk mentioned, the only way osd works (in my experience) is in composite or s-video (which is what I use). I've not tried it via component at 480i...though I will try to check that tonight. It is kind of a pain to have to switch your input source to s-video from dvi or component to see what the setup is...you basically have to rely on the 970's display to see what's going on (and that's tough if you're more than 6 feet away due to the small display).

Mine will run the OSD in 480i with component just not anything higher than that.
