I hope I am not showing my ignorance here...but I feel I am among friends.

I recently purchased new brackets for my front l&r speakers which allow me the flexibility to angle them toward the listening position. As such I thought it a good time to recheck the calibration and adjust the trim level.

My basic question is, at what level should the main volume be when performing the calibration. I have tried various volumes. Average listening level for movies (seems to make sense); zero which was very loud and resulted in trim levels of -10db...I didn't feel comfortable with that; and other random volume settings.

The specs from Outlaw for the 1070 say Volume Range (Main) -70dB to +10.0dB. Therefore would it make sense to calibrate at say -30db or -20db?

I am using a Radio Shack analogy SPL meter.

I look forward to your wisdom.

The rule of thumb is to calibrate with the master volume set to 0dB and to adjust so the test tones measure 75dB. This sets the "reference level" (what movies are mixed at) to the 0dB setting for the 1070's volume.

You can set the master volume to something lower when calibrating, or you can calibrate 0dB to a different level (such as 65dB or 80dB), depending on your personal preferences.
