I was recalibrating my video after routing everything through the 1070 just to be certain that it didn't require any tweaking and noticed that I am now unable to get my player to display the blacker-than-black bars in the pluge pattern. Before, when the my DVD player was connected directly through component cables it didn't seem to have a problem, but now it's just totally gone. Any ideas?

I'm reopening this old thread as I'm having problems calibrating the brightness on an Oppo 970 running component video through a 1070.

For example, using a THX optimizer test, I can't even get the THX logo to appear unless I crank the brightness all the way to +16 (max) on the Oppo...and even then I have to up the brightness on the display from it's default to get the THX to show.

Does the 1070 have problems with blacker than black/whiter than white?

Tried a direct connection to the display without the 1070...no difference so the 1070 is not the problem here.

I wonder if the player's and the display's settings may be working at cross purposes? You may want to zero-out the settings on both. Then start with a rough calibration on your display and fine tune from there with the player.

Likewise, if you have not already done so, you may want to peruse this third party, advanced set up guide on your player: http://www.oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd-adv-setup-guide.pdf

Lastly, I have the 971H, and if I recall correctly, that player's video settings could not be optimized via the component outputs. Not sure how the 970 compares in that regard, but I throw it out there just as an FYI.

The 970HD's component output is not as limited as the 971H's, but I do agree that the best place to start is to zero out the player's settings and try adjusting at the display first. Unfortunately I haven't used the 970HD, so I am not sure what video settings would be worth checking first. I do know that the 970HD's s-video output does not pass blacker-than-black, but I don't know if that limitation extended to the component video output.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been working with Oppo on this as well. I did not have this problem when using the 970 with a projector...there's something odd with my television. I tried my Denon 1730 with it as well and have the same problem if I set the black level to "on" (which I'm guessing is a blacker-than-black switch of some sort). It calibrates fine with black turned "off" (which is the default on the Denon) so I'm just gonna use it with that TV and save the 970 for my next projector.
