For my CD/DVD player using Coax 1 digital audio input I set that as the default input and Dolby IIx-M as the default surround mode in the configuration menu for DVD. But it always defaults to analog and Dolby IIx-C. It doesn't matter if auto is on or off. What am I missing? I loved the way the 950 worked (it would default to Dolby Digital if present otherwise fall back to last used mode). I must be doing somthing wrong because it just can't be designed this way.

Dolby IIx-C is the universal default, regardless of how you set the surround mode. This is by design, but I hope the Outlaws will revise this with a future software update. (Let us choose the default mode for each input! Please!)

I can't comment on the analog problem because I haven't faced it. Good luck finding a solution.

You're not doing anything wrong. As long as it detects a digital signal, it will default to IIx-c. Even if you change it. Hookup analog connections and set the audio to analog in the input menu, then the setting will stick. Sounds like this will be a big issue. I suggested to Outlaw as well that they make the default mode configurable. I feel if I have a device with digital outputs, I want to use them and configure the surround mode I want. Try hooking up analog connections from your DVD and see if that helps.

This is bad. I wonder why is there a setting in the configuration menu then if it is not saved. No beta testers objected? I will see if I can make a convenient punch through on my universal remote but even if they were forced to use the -C mode default just to get the product out the door I can't understand the analog default in my case. No one else has complained so it must not be universal. I will try digging deeper and test some of the other inputs.

There is a setting for the default. However, maybe you possibly have auto-polling turned off, or else it'll try to autodetect what type of signal it is. I leave autopolling on for my DVD player usually, and my CD player, computer, and Xbox digital inputs I turn off autopolling so that I can set the CD player to Stereo, and the Computer and Xbox to Dolby Digital.

My particular problem turned out to be user error (as I somehow expected). My universal remote still had relics of my 950 on it so I did a key by key update and now the defaulting to analog doesn't happen. It will now remember my PLIIx-M config default instead of PLIIx-C . That works out well for me but it still won't remember stereo as a default on the digital input which I can understand some users would want.

I seem to have no issue with the above thread. However, I have a different settings issue. I am using a Denon-2910 universal player. It is hooked up with an optical input and the 6 analog inputs as well. When viewing a video DVD, I have the video connection configuration selecting Dolby Digital for audio. Sounds great! However, when I play a SACD directly after and video DVD, I must go in and manually select "EXT 7.1" to change this preference. I'm sure this is correct as I think my DVD player sends signals out to both sets of outs and the 1070 uses the original optical input. Any comments?

That is exactly how I would recommend using a universal player - use the digital input as the default, but switch to the 7.1 direct input when you are listening to SACD or DVD-Audio discs. You will need to make that selection manually.

Doesn't the button on the remote that says 7.1 do that for you?

It does - and on re-reading Ragnar's post, I just realized that he might have been going into the setup menu. Good point, jlib.
