I'm not sure of the cost, but it looks like it has some nice features that aren't even on our 990s, such as 1080p HDMI.

There's no indication that the unit will accept audio via HDMI, though - and at an MSRP of $2500.

I downloaded the PDF manual, and on specs page 63, it says:

"HDMI (Switching Video/Audio/DDC/HPD) ...............480i-1080p"

And under DVD on page 19:

"HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is an advanced
audio/video connection method that transfers
full-bandwidth, uncompressed digital audio and video
signals over a single cable.
As a result, pure digital signals can pass unfettered
from your HDMI-compatible source components to
the GTP-870HD and out to your digital TV for superior
picture and sound quality.

The GTP-870HD is more than just a switch for HDMI
source components. The GTP-870HD comes with a
built-in scaler, a powerful video signal processor that
allows you to scale the 480i or 576i NTSC/PAL inputs
of your source components and output the precise
resolution for your display device up to 1080p.
That means you can run your legacy video sources
through the GTP-870HD to your HDMI display device
through a single cable. The powerful, integrated processor
deinterlaces and scales standard NTSC/PAL
signals to the native resolution of your display."

$2500 is still alot (since you'd still need an Amp), but at least it looks like it has HDMI covered.

Hmmm... I could have sworn that I'd made another post here after finding the manual myself yesterday, but apparently I was more tired yesterday than I realized...

I also saw the comment on page 19, but I interpreted it to mean that it passes HDMI audio through the unit but doesn't actually use the HDMI audio. That explains why there's no mention of an HDMI version (it'd need to be at least v1.1 to accept multichannel PCM, and without that - with v1.0, for example - HDMI audio support is effectively identical to SPDIF). I also noted the omission of instructions regarding HDMI audio input and the following sidebar on page 19:
Quote:
TIP: The HDMI connections pass both audio and video signals from your source device to you routput device; however, to use the full audio processing power of the GTP-870 we recommend that you connect a separate audio cable (analog or digital) from your source device to the appropriate input on the GTP-870. Se page 15 for analog audio connections or page 18 for digital audio connections.
To me, that says the HDMI input is pure video as far as the GTP-870's use of it. The video processing could is a nice touch, but you could use the 990 and an outboard video scaler to achieve the same results and still come in under $2500.

I really wish HDMI had established some branding separation for receivers that would differentiate HDMI video switching from true (audio/video) HDMI. I've lost count of the number of products that I've had to dig through manuals and spec sheets to figure out that their HDMI implementation doesn't do audio - and every one of those has "HDMI" silk-screened on the front panel. The GTP-870 is just one more example of a surround processor that includes HDMI without using the audio side.

Come on Outlaw, I'm going to be the first to pull the trigger when Outlaw comes out with a replacement 990. Hopefully it has at least 3 HDMI inputs, 4 would be better and sure would be nice to see the new audio formats incorporated into the unit so it can decode threw the HDMI inputs.

I was looking at the Adcom GTP-870HD DVD player as my Yamha S2500 Crapped out on me right after the warranty expired. I wrote them and they told me that the DVD player and the GFR-870HD use the same surround sound processors and HDMI 1.2.

If you're into DVD-A or want upscaling of DVD source then it might be a good choice. If you want something that fully works with HDMI 1.3 or 1.3a, then probably best to wait.

Unless Adcom has made a running spec change, the GTP-870 HD has HDMI v1.0. I used to be a fan of Adcom, but after careful research and several telehone calls to Adcom, I would not choose this unit (especially at $2500.00). Read the manual carefully and you will find several quirks in the basic setup and operation. Outlaw has done a much better job. I agree that Outlaw needs to move faster on a replacement for the 990. In the meantime, you might consider the new Integra DTC 9.8, MSRP $1600.00 over the Adcom. Just my opinion.
