Shouldn't the 990, using coax, apply the use of sub? Shouldn't it be the same as for anolog?

With spaeker set to small ,I used HSU/BAS test CD to see if I was getting low freq to Sub with a coaxial feed. Seems I am.Just real weak as compared to Analog.
Next I set front speakers to large. Coax actualy gives me better bass in this setting vs analog.Can't quite figure this all out ?

The sub trim level should be global - doesn't matter what mode or source type you are using. Is there any chance that your analog source has a bass adjustment somewhere along the way?

The player is a Cambridge Audio 640D. I don't know of any bass adjusment it may have.If you've every thumbed through the owners manual on any CA product, you'd probably ask yourself why they even write one..( For owners of the CA 540D dvd player,get your hands on the Oppo 970 owners manual, it's comprehinsive and is exactly the same menu etc,)
Using the Rad Shack SPL meter, The 640d is boasting the volume by as much as +4 db over analog vs. coaxial on the same songs. On kettle drums it will climb to +6 over the coaxial feed. While the dacs in the 990 add an extra clearity to the highs and mids, the 640d emphisize the lower bass regions.Once I add multi channel to the mix, everything evens out analog vs coaxial.Still here though, the 990's dacs give an added clearity to the highs.. I can't figure this one out?
I also tried 5 channel stereo with the rear 2 channels cut to -15, again anolog vs coax yielded no difference in volume.
I do have other questions but will for go asking until I have exasperated my limited knowledge trying to figure them out myself.

My suspicion is that you're running into a difference in the analog section of the player versus the analog section of the 990. It's possible that the Cambridge simply accentuates the lower octaves, while the 990 tends toward neutral. When you accentuate that low end, it can "drown out" (for lack of a better word) the higher frequencies.

Gonk, you must be right. The Britts are known to accenuate certain freq in order to obtain a " different sound".
Another odd anomoly: The 990 will play sources much lower than the 635 did.On movies with the 635,( Parasound amp)I would have volume set to -28.The Outlaw I need to set it at -15 to-10 to achieve the same volume.
[ On 7.1 ,I am able to boost line levels in the Marantz DVD player to achieve closer levels as compared to he HK.::another question here is, do I use the speaker distance setting in the DVD p or set all to 0 ?]
Would it be plausable to, boost speaker settings in " speaker callibrate"( 990) to make up some of the difference? As I have it set up now, no speaker has a level above +5.Would increasing the settings be a mistake.

Volume settings are tied to the reference level calibrated to - it's possible that the 635 was intended for an 85dB reference level instead of the 75dB level used by the 990's test tones (and many calibration discs). You could raise all the channel trim levels an equal amount, but unless you are operating regularly at 0dB or even +1dB or above I wouldn't worry with it.

The DVD player's distance settings, channel trim settings, and bass management only apply for the multichannel analog output. Because of the 990's ability to apply bass management to the 7.1 Direct input, I would recommend leaving all distance settings and channel trims at zero and set all speakers to large (and sub to "on").

Those were the answeres I was looking for.
I will boost all speakers in " speaker calibration".
