Hey 950 owners. Can the 950 be set up to send the side surround material to the rear surround during 5.1 playback? No matrixing or anything. Just the rears playing the exact same thing as the sides.

Thanks, Greg

I have a switching box that does this. You can use some of the post-processing modes to steer some signal to the rear surrounds, but it is not quite the same thing.

MC & SH:

Hee, hee. I just got my 2 switch boxes from MCM Electronics to do this very thing. I want to compare CES 5.1 to 7.1 vs 5.1 with the surrounds copied to the rears for 7.1. Will take me a while to try I admit, but it's on my agenda...

SH, sounds like...you've heard it. Is it a tweak worth doing for 5.1 material?

I think it is. However, I can get somewhat the same end effect by simply playing all movies that are 5.1 in EX mode.

SH- But the danger of applying the EX mode to *some* std 5.1 DD (or ES to DTS) discs, is that if there is too much mono info in the surrounds, the rear soundstage can "collapse" into the rears. Why not just use the CES modes for DD (or DTS)? You still get the matrixed content to the rears, but it doesn't as much drop the common info from the surrounds.

I didn't mention that I use the Smart "CircleSurround" EX decoder at all times, which does not have as aggressive steering logic as normal EX decoding as in the 950. It keeps the soundfield in all the speakers quite nicely. Of course if something is in polarity and equal volume in both surround channels, it is going to the rear no matter what. But that is as it should be. I also have this in line with my mixing console so when I do mixes into the surrounds, the sound automatically goes into the back surrounds whan I do pans across the left and right surrounds. This is how it will sound when the mix finally ends up on the dubbing stage when that track is split out on it's own for EX encoding. I just didn't want to bore you all with these details initially......

SH: I keep forgetting that you know a lot more about a lot of this stuff than most of us.
