Just purchased a Harman kardon AVR320 to use as a preamp 7.1-Channel Audio/Video Receiver With Dolby® Digital, DTS®, Logic 7® and VMAx® Decoding. The AVR 320 is Harman Kardon's first affordable A/V receiver to feature breakthrough 7.1-channel surround-sound processing, which is available with several surround modes, including two modes of our exclusive Logic 7 decoding. The AVR 320 is also loaded with advanced features found only in premium-priced receivers, including DTS-ES 6.1 surround sound; 8-channel direct inputs; wideband, HDTV-ready component video switching; 7.1 preamp outputs; 6 digital inputs and 3 digital outputs; a front-panel digital input that can be switched to output mode; 192kHz/24-bit D/A converters, and Harman Kardon's patented EzSet remote control. for much less than the 950......could not wait any longer, we'll see how this works out and when and what Outlaws will ship

I've had an Aragon Soundstage in my rack for about 4 hours. It's nothing short of phenominal! The preamp is based on the Aragon Aurum Class A pre. Absolutely stellar sound. There's an upgrade to all new formats due anytime. The formats on board now sound incrdible. I couldn't be more satisfied.
I purchased it at Ubid for 1700.00. It's a model year 2001. With an MSRP of 4000.00, and a 2 year warrantee, I couldn't pass it up. I also couldn't wait on Outlaw any longer.

9mtg: Shoulda waited for the 525 or at least the 325.

The 320 only has Logic 7 for 2 channel sources, and no DD EX.

Mix: I'm jealous! But I'm still a waitin' on the Outlaws...

Or a Denon 3803...

Or an H/K 525...

Or that new Pioneer 45 might be OK...

Or if the new Integra 7.3, if you can apply different crossovers to different speaker(s) (sets)...

Kevin,
I saw your name in the Klipsch forum, so I know you were sniffing around! You owe it to yourself to listen to the Aragon gear. Awesome!

Please get your facts straight, before dissing someone>>> and donn't shoot from the hip like most Outlaws>>>>>>Brown that's UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Easy there, fella. I don't think Kevin was criticizing or speaking ill of your new receiver. Deep breath, and go easy on the keyboard. From a look at the manual (there's a list of processing modes on page 26), it would appear that Kevin is right -- the 320 does not include Dolby Digital EX, and the Logic 7 processing can be applied to any stereo source (TV, VCR, CD, or two-channel audio from a DVD), but can't be used to produce surround back information from a 5.1 source. The manual is a little fuzzy on the second point, but that's the way it reads to me.

With that, I'm grabbing a sandwich and heading for east Tennessee...

Ignorance is a lack of knowledge, or the inability to get it.
Logic 7 is a Patented process with either 5.1 or 7.1, discrete channels obtained from the PCM code of the DVD codec, Harman International now has the patents based upon its purchase of Lexicon. The Logic 7 is not obtained for DD. It has been available on earlier models, as an example the AVR210 which had Logic 7 for 5.1 channels. It seems to me all Knowledge does not flow from Gonk or Kevin Brown, but also is Disseminated elsewhere....just my humble opinion

Oooooh! First a post from 911MTC that reads like ad copy, then a "you hurt my feelings post", and then a "you're a bunch of ignoramuses" post. What a guy! Kicked any midgets lately?

MixFixJ ..... Good choice with the Soundstage. I've got one myself matched up with Aragon amps and it really is a nice unit. I did try out an Outlaw 950 but the noise floor was a bit high and not having separate settings (sub, etc.) for analog listening kept me from keeping it. Other than that, the 950 is a great piece of equipment, especially at its price point. You should try out the Outlaw cables if you haven't already, I've bought several sets and they're comparable in quality to StraightWire or other well-made cables.

According to the manual Logic7 works only with 2 channel and matrixed sources such as Dolby surround. It does not, according to the manual, work with Dolby Digital or DTS. (p.21 H/K AVR320 Owner's Manual {System Configuration})

9mtg: See if you can understand this:

Logic 7 on the Lexicon DC-1, DC-2, MC-1, and MC-12 processors can be applied to stereo and 5.1 DD/DTS (and by definition, DD EX and DTS-ES matrix) formats. Maybe even DD 4.0 for example.

On the cheaper H/K receivers, you can only engage Logic 7 on 2 channel stereo sources. Then why do they call it Logic 7 for 5.1 or 7.1 channels? Because that's what it "expands" the 2 channel stereo source to. You gave to go up to the 7000 (I think) before you can get Logic 7 on an H/K receiver that can be applied to a 5.1 source.

The new 225 is *rumored* to have Logic 7 able to be applied to 5.1 sources. (I saw a blurb in S&V mag on it.) So the presumption is that will also be the case for the 325 and 525 when they come out.

Make sense?

This all kinda sorta has already been covered, more than once btw, on HTF...

I'm already running Outlaw cables throughout my rig, excepting speaker cables of course. I agree with you on the quality. I would also say that it's money well spent, and would recommend Outlaw cables to anyone. Hey, and they look great too!
I'm loving the Aragon!

Mr. Fixj - Congrats big time on your Aragon. Though the 950's a bargain at $900, the Aragon at $1700 is a way better deal.

For another $800, you have a killer built in 2 channel pre (that I'll have to pay over a thousand extra for a seperate unit to mate with my 950), and the HT sonics should be leagues ahead as well.

Then again, and these are just silly rumours - but owners of the Soundstage have reported surprisingly high incidences of getting cooties.

If you want to play it safe and trade your Soundstage for a 950 plus cash, just let me know.

Aragon that name alone, is begging for a play of LOTR through it. Enjoy!

Y'all really are most gracious to someone who would appear to be an "Outlaw Turncoat". I really am enjoying the Aragon. The preamp alone was just about worth it.
I wish you all luck with the new 950's. (has anyone ever heard so much whining in their lives?). I look forward to future Outlaw releases. How about a multichanger-transport with optical outs? Let the chips onboard our processors do the work. My 2 cents.
Miss Lena, LOTR was one of the first things that I viewed with the new processor.

Heh. I think the primary reason more of us aren't turncoats is more a lack of easy opportunity, rather than any sort of conviction.

Truthfully, I don't know if there can be any Outlaw turncoats anymore.

I have had my 950, in one form or another, for more than 9 months. That is a longer time than any other pre/pro or A/V receiver that I've owned in the last 4 years. It has served me well and will continue to do so for as long as I think its' value to me outweighs its' resale value versus the cost effective purchase of a more desireable unit.

Many of us have fought the good Outlaw fight. We have earned our battle pay. IMO, we have upheld our beliefs and principles while doing so. Upon reading what I've posted, it was appropriate for the timeline I posted it, and I can't think of anything I'd take back... except for some of the over the top enthusiasm I had for the 950. Still... that's just me, I tend to be enthusiastic about alot of things.

Now, we deserve to retire when we want to and just move on... still with an Outlaw induced smile on our faces...

If I didn't want to keep my 950 for awhile longer, I'd not bother with trading for an upgraded unit.
