I communicated with the outlaws yesterday and they informed me that information would in fact be released in the next few days.......and I was aware of their last promise to release information the week of August 5.

I had an unrelated question and while I was talking with one of the outlaws he just said that the letter would be out in a few days.......I guess the way most of you are always grasping at straws you would appreciate any information no matter how minuscule it is.

Either 19 hrs to go, or 26 hrs to go, by my count....

(5pm West Coast time, or 12 midnight.)

Subtract 3 hrs for East Coast time...

Hasn't everybody learned??
The 'promise' of a newsletter this week from Outlaw means that you can probably expect to see one sometime in the next few weeks! Actually, it wasn't really promised this week, just 'planned'.

Either way, the "week of Aug 5th" is coming to an end. So is my current Adcom pre/pro. I think it has a power supply problem. I sure could use another pre/pro. Anyone know where I can find one

Well, the week is not over yet... I've been looking for it every half-hour since monday. It's a looonnnggg wait.

Hope they will get out some news fast. I want to see the status on the new amp. That's what sold me on the 950 'cause the 770 is simply too big to fit...

But don't expect me to wait until december. I will move before that. Sherwood/Newcastle sure have something to look at.

The upcoming Sherwood/Nescastle pre/pro/tuner has been talked about since before January 2002. Although in January they thought it would be available in September (next month), these days I have no idea if it will be out before December, or what it will go for exactly. But the Rotel is out now and is somewhat upgradable (unlike the Outlaw), but costs more than the Outlaw and has no tuner. Outlaw's FM tuner is fine, but if you listen to AM, you won't like the Outlaw AM tuner. It's pretty terrible.

I'm telling you this http://davislab.com/products_01.htm looks awesome and at a CES reported price of $3000.00 not too shabby. But who are they and they are available where?
(i don't know if I created a link or not, sorry)

Davis Labs is a Korean Company dedicated to digital technology, however the Processor One which isn't available yet will be priced above your posted price of $3000.00. It will be carried here by AV123, the same company that carries Perpetual Technology room correction gear and high end DAC's as well as the ever popular Onix Rockets speakers.

That does look pretty slick, something that at that price could potentially give the Anthem AVM-20 a run for its money (although with what little appears to be available on it, it's hard to say anything for sure). It's a shame that all they have on the site is a rendering -- SMR had pictures of it from January. They had an amp there, too, and both were due out by mid-year.

That may, or may not, be true. Is there some Outlaw rule that states that all promised dates must be pushed to the absolute last minute, if met at all? All the waiting has finally jaded me to the Outlaw 'hype'. Sure would be nice if something could turn that around. Like an accurate and expedient shipping date for a 950! Wouldn't that be nice?

I'm not an engineer, but from what I have heard, and my understanding of the specs, the Processor One is at the cutting edge of digital technology. So I'm thinking it's a real good thing. I am anxious to take a look at one.

Theoretically, the end of "the week of Aug 5" could be midnight tonight.

But I'm trying to figure out if I care anymore...

If you go to "what's new" at Davislab.com
you'll see all they have is one page and it's about "processor one". And if you look at the date it says 7/03/2001. I don't think that site has been updated since then. That's over a year ago and there is still no product? What the hell? Then, the 2002 CES site says "coming soon"? Again, what the hell!
Who is gonna carry it? Some high end boutique in California and maybe one in New York?

It sounds like they're just getting started and don't have a large development team... This thing looks like it'd be quite a product, though, if they succeed in getting it out the door.

I also noticed an add for a pre-pro by Fogate-Audionics. It looks pretty cool and has a video display in the center of it. Of course when I went to check it out at their web-site, it wasn't there. What's with electronics companies and their pre-advertising. One would think that if you were gonna spend money on an ad then you would have info on it at the web-site posted at the bottom of the add.
It could be a good piece though (at least in the Pro-logic modes since they invented it).
Ok Minuteman help me out here....

Sorry Max,
I'm not up on Fosgate although it could be a nice piece. I'm more interested in the new all digital stuff. I think it is the wave of the future. Everything that can be done has been done (or doesn't need to be) in the analogue world. The digital stuff is cool. Lightweight, cheap, no heat therefore less wear etc.

That's cool. Did I read right that the Processor One does not have any analog through-put and stuff? And I wonder if Av123 would know when they are gonna get it. And since they claim to be so cheap that it won't cost the $3500.00 price mentioned in the CES report?

There was a big thread a few months back on the Davis over at AVS, should still be in the archives.

Mark Schrifter of AV123 is the guy to ask current questions.

Dear Outlaws:

As we have often stated, all of the Outlaws read all of the posts in this Forum, but we also refrain from interfering with the flow of the threads so that the discussion in not tilted in one direction or other by us. However, some of the recent posts have brought up a subject that I felt merits my personal intervention.

Some of you have complained that the August Update was a bit light on new information. We realize that, but given the promise to release something (a commitment that many of you were taking us to task on) we wanted to at least issue some statement. Laugh if you will, but we said that an Update would go out before the end of the week of the 5th, and it did. (In typical Outlaw time!)

That having been said, I’d like to provide some additional thoughts given the current discussions
As a member of the Outlaw team I am privy to the day-to-day flow of data between our engineering teams in Taiwan, California and New England, as well as the factory in Maylasia. I am confident that we are extremely close to resolution to the issues that have impacted the Model 950, but if we were to release daily updates it will only confuse matters and create more, not less frustrated customers.

To sum up: the discussions that I have been involved with in the last 96 hours since the Update was released -- indicate that we are really close. We have a plan ready to activate, and once we get the word from the factory, we will start to get the corrected Model 950s in your hands very quickly. I believe it, and the rest of the Outlaw's believe it. As a matter of fact, one of the Outlaws never went to bed last night as he dealt with engineering and production teams in Taiwan and Malaysia to nail down a “pesky” technical issue. (He stumbled into his day job this morning, only to pick up where he left off at 5:00 AM this morning!)

Bottom line: Nothing is more important to all of us than to get the 950 going again and we literally are working around the clock on it. However, we will do it right and that unfortunately takes time.

A final note: Those of you, who have come to know me over the last couple of years, know that I am dedicated to providing the quickest most accurate answers and service possible. It has never been my, or any other Outlaw's, intent to provide less than this. I was Outlaw’s first full time employee. I was excited to join the company then and am even more excited today about our future plans.

Sincerely,

Scott Jackson

If anyone cares I just got a response from
Fosgate about their pre-pro, and it is as follows:

Chris,

Literature is being printed as I'm writing this email. We should
receive it in about 2 weeks. The planned release date is late September
early October and it will retail for $2999.99

Contact me in a couple of weeks and I will get literature sent out.

Rockford/Hafler Technical Support
(480) 967-3565

Looks like Sept. is the magic month for alot of companies and it seems $3,000 is the common price. Little steep for me.
I did hear about a company called Outlaw. they might have a good piece reasonably priced, maybe I'll check it out.

Is this really the place to be writing about Fosgate, Davis, etc. -- ??

Sure - mention of these items is certainly fine - but a continual barrage, discussion, updates, phone numbers, links, etc. is a bit out-of-place.

Shouldn't these companies provide their own forums and cyberspace? Isn't this just a bit impolite to the hosts here?

Kent: Don't worry. It looks like Outlaw may in fact have a product which does almost the same, to the same degree and quality, by Fosgates release date... for about 1/3 the price.

Then again... talk to me again in October.

I have to point out, that I too was attempting to look at the Davis Labs offering last year. You have to attribute to the Outlaw’s the sheer courage of putting up with their own forum. A necessary evil for a company which sells direct. Do you think an in-house forum for the Processor One, would sound similar to Outlaw’s forum (on a bad day) after all this time.
From Davis, in all these months till the prior post, my sole store of information on this product was one picture on the web site, with an intriguing laundry list of features. And an aging CES nod.

Outlaw gets second by second scrutiny of their in-house development process. I have a tendency to surf the electronics and semiconductors parts suppliers and developers occasionally to try and read the future. Its amazing how many mentions you find when you do this of a company like Texas Instruments, or Cirrus Logic, who announce working with an end producer of an A/V product, incorporating their almost developed XXX part, estimated TTM the fall of next year. You realize you’ve just seen the discussed product mentioned in some A/V news web site such as S&V. S&V mentions if on schedule the product is due in stores the next few months from the A/V Company, and then I realize the Semi-Conductors web article is dated from 2 years ago!

I don’t know anyone who owns the new Davis lab unit yet. I have a 950. Everytime I run into articles such as these it appears to me, Outlaw is doing what the industry does, just under a grinding spotlight beamed at them by an uneducated consumer.

Fosgate was really big in the early 90's with their Dolby Pro Logic stuff. Nice to see them again.

More competition can only be a good thing for everyone.

No tubes, more Digital...tech.

Go back to the first page of this topic there is a link to Davislab.com with pic and specs. It sore looks purty, but I have not seen any activity on it in months.

ekk, Steves, just realized you asked about the Fosgate, I have not looked at that one!

Since this thread has wandered in every direction possible I thought it would be OK to ask now. Does anyone else see this thread and think of the spice Cumin? Makes me think of Mexican food everytime I come to the Outlaw Forum.

Yup, with Babingga wood paneling no less! Here's a press blurb about it from June 2001:

Fosgate Audionics has planned a special vacuum tube surround sound unit, the FAP-V1 ($7,499), to be available in January of 2002. This is a very limited availability product under the Jim Fosgate Signature series. Using the new Dolby Pro Logic II specification, for now this is the only tubed unit set to appear in the market. Of course the FAP-V1 will playback normal 2-channel stereo as well as have the ability to decode analog surround sound to a 5.1-channel output via the Pro Logic II system. Some of the features within this unit include center width adjustment, bass blend and equalization. The FAP-V1 also includes a three year parts/labor and labor warranty. Some of the preliminary specifications are:

Model Number: FAP-V1
Description: Vacuum tube Pre-amplifier with 5.1 channel surround sound and Dolby Pro Logic II decoder
Frequency Response: TBA
Total Harmonic Distortion (THD): TBA
Cabinet: Copper and Babingga Wood
Dimensions: 10.22" x 19.87" x 15.14" (HxWxD)
Processor Type: Dolby Pro-Logic II
Preamplifier Circuitry: Vacuum Tube

For a pic, go here , you'll have to scroll down to mid-page. It's quite the looker!

Best,
Sanjay

Actually the pre-pro that I was talking about, and got a response letter from Fosgate (see above), is called the FAPT-1 It has a normal metal chassis but has a 5" display in the middle of it. Kind of like ATI's pre-pro. And, as also mentioned above, it will go for $3,000.00. There is an ad for it in the Sept. issue of Stereophiles' Guide to Home Theater, page 77 to be exact.
I would really like to have a ballpark estimate about when Outlaw's more expensive pre will be out. (course we're still in the outfield on this one it seems). I thought originally they stated like twice the price, which is still reasonable for me. I would hold off if it was in the near future.

I may have given out some misinformation inadvertantly regarding the proposed pricing of the Davis Labs Processor One. It seems it will indeed be priced in the $3500.00 area. Sorry about that. It is still being worked on though and no release date is set as yet.

The Outlaws have been quite silent for a while now about the next pre/pro. It could be that they're simply not working on it, because they're putting all their effort into the 950 or because they're waiting for the DVD-A stuff to sort itself out. Or it could be that they simply don't want to say anything about it now because of all the flak they took over their broken 950 promises. So we really don't know if it's coming in a year or two or not at all. I don't think it's coming in the next few months, though.

I wouldn't expect much info on the next pre/pro any time soon, even if they do already have in in development. I wouldn't expect them to make any sort of official mention of future products until they are very well along in production. Between the fact that I would expect the design of the 950's big brother to take at least a year or two and the fact that they want to include digital input for DVD-A/SACD (which would require a standard that hasn't been finalized yet), that means the 950's big brother is not going to be here any time soon.
