I ran across some photos of the 950 and thought y'all might be interested. I have no idea if they are current or if they reflect the final unit, but they are the best that I have seen. At least you can see the display, and they are large enough so you can tell what the buttons on the front do and what the connections on the back are.

They are newer photos than on this web site. I can see the Dolby Digital EX logo on the front! I placed my reservation at 10:04 the night it opened so I'm hoping I get one of the first ones to ship.
Good job getting these photos!

Nice discovery! Those are new pictures. Very interesting. (I'm hoping to hear about whatever announcements the Outlaws make at CES before I go out of town this weekend...)

Edit: I just took a second look t the alpha unit pictures, and the rear panel pictures look the same. The front is the same except for the silkscreening (the DD-EX logo that MikeS noted, the location of the different badges, and the number -- they've consolidated some, it seems).

One thing that appears to be missing is the DTS NEO logo. I do see DTS-ES but not the NEO6.

They did reduce the number of logos, which is sort of curious. The Cirrus Logic logo has been changed, too, and the "6.1" logo eliminated. (edit: typo fixed; can't type today...)

What makes me even more curious is the list of images -- the first three that refer to the "IR1000" all link to the same pretty picture of the ICBM-1. So what might the "IR1000" be? Perhaps something that they plan to announce at CES this week? There was a brief blurb months ago in a news post about a device that would need Internet connectivity -- "Internet Radio"? How's that for little SWAG (Scientific Wild-Ass Guess)?

How reliable is this gspr site? I don't find any mention of this P2000 on the Atlantic Technology site.

I will say that it is a scary resemblance, though. Looks like the same exact product, right down to the lettering on the rear labels. The only differences are in the logos and the brushed look of the front panel. It even has the same thing lit up on the display. Makes me a bit suspicious. One or the other has GOT to be a photoshop job.

Question is, which one?

Twins?! Woah. Same interior construction, same rear panel, almost identical front panel (same button layout), same Cirrus processing (triple crossover, extra surround), and they're both made in Malaysia (same factory?). I'll be curious to hear the story behind this.

OK, I just had a thought that might help explain the P2000. Currently, the only products Atlantic Technology sells are speakers. This older thread asked what speakers the Outlaws use for equipment testing -- the answer was Atlantic Technology System 270 and 370 because of their reputation for neutral sound. So the first non-speaker product Atlantic Technology offers is a re-branded pre/pro designed by a company that uses their speakers for equipment testing. That actually makes some sense. It may also be a way to get the 950 (in a somewhat different form) in regular retail channels for the non-Internet buyers. I'll be curious to see why they chose to begin selling such a product. I'll also be curious to see what the price is for a P2000 (assuming that it will be sold through regular channels like Atlantic's other products).

Hi,
I've come across this website and found out about your AV pre/pro.
However, when I checked your website, I could not find any information
about the product. I have several questions:
1. Does this website have your authorization to post information about
your products?
2. How reliable is the website? The URL is:
http://www.gspr.com/atlanticphotos.html
3. If this is actually one of your product, is it available anywhere and
what is the cost?
Thank you much.

Hi,
This product is not yet available. It should be in a few months.
And, yes, the website you went to is authorized to post of products. There is no retail yet.

Thanks,

Wacthing the posts for awhile on this thread I went out surfing and found something.
Sorry dont know how to link, if you guys have a sec. search for.
Cary Audio P7 proc/preamp. ( Look at the picture - am I crazy or is it the faceplate of the outlaw for 3 1/2K)!

What's up with all the -"wow, that sure 'looks' like the Outlaw 950" remarks?

Clearly, beyond a shadow of any doubt, that IS the 950. Are people too scared to admit it or something?

How much will that one cost is the real question?

And maybe, how much longer (if any) has the 950 been delayed because this AT model was also being worked on? Hopefully AT was working on the case themselves while Outlaw was doing the real work on the 950, but who knows...

Oh, it's the 950 alright. Hence my "same button layout, same interior, same back, same processing" comment - if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it's a duck (or a 950, in this case... quack). I personally was just sort of startled. And I can't believe that there would be any delay in the 950 if it's just a matter of AT designing their own faceplate.

I found a picture of the Cary Audio P7 here . I can see some general style similarities to the 950 as far as the layout of the front is concerned, although that's mainly because of the spartan faceplant with two-line display in the center and the large volume knob on the right.

would that mean several more weeks/months before we could place our orders? it is hard to choose now. 'funky' looking face plate 950 + 1.8 meter PCA or 'cool' looking AT + availability in a couple of months + unknown price....

With the Outlaw 950 and the Atlantic Technology clone being revealed its obvious what this year's C.E.S. really means:

Consumers
Expressing
Surprise

I'm sure curious what the A.T. unit will retail for (and it better be more than $899)!

It's really interesting after all of the discussion about the like/dislike of the Outlaw logo and green power button, that it now appears that there will be a 950 clone with looks that should please those who were complaining. Certainly will be interesting to see what the list price of the Atlantic Technology will be.

Well, if they mark it up like they do their Vance Dickeson designed 450 thx speakers, it will be at least $2000. Their 450 speakers are nice, though. I have the center
channel speaker and it is very nice.

I say..buy the 950, then order a replacement faceplace from AT when they release their version of it--shouldn't run more than 50 bucks and you have the best of both worlds!

Price seems a bit steep for a aluminum faceplate compared to 899.00 for the 950.Maybe the AT model will have a differant remote(touch screen?).In my opinion a price differential like that would warrant something more than a differant faceplate. But remember that Outlaw has stated that 899.00 is a intro price on the 950 ,keeps the door open for a price increase down the road, maybe about the time Atlantic releases the P2000(hmm!!!).
I wonder how soon we can expect "Outlaw Speakers" and Maybe a "Atlantic Technology Receiver"

You have to remember, Outlaw Audio sells only direct via the Internet. per their web site, Atlantic Technology sells only via the traditional retail channel. You can be sure that there will be several more hands being held out for their share of the pie of the A.T. P2000.

I guess I'm really confused as to how Outlaw and Atlantic Technology are related since the President of AT is one of the principals behind Outlaw. Seems like a conflict of interest to me. Do all of the Outlaws have day jobs? Maybe if they were devoted full time, the 950 would have been released by now.

Don't be so hard on them. If I were starting my own company with some friends, I would like to keep my day job until things were very solid. Paying (and benefits) for even 5 people, who probably were making good money at their old jobs, is tough for a young company. And remember, they started out with only a 5-channel amp. Not enough volume there to pay everyone I'm sure.

Also, they are basically managers. They decide what the want to sell. They hire other teams to design the unit to Outlaw's specs/feature list and outsource the manufacturing. If they are doing they jobs, they don't need to be burning the mightnight oil to get the 950 to market. They are making a few calls a day to push those who are working for them.

That's my take anyway.

Read the About Outlaw page on thier site. This isn't anything new, nor anything they've tried to keep hidden.

Pat, I had read the About information. I thought it was great that these people decided to start a company to manufacture and distribute audio equipment directly to consumers. It is part of the reason I want to buy a 950 from them. However, nowhere does it say who the principals are and that they are still devoted to their real jobs. So, how can you say "This isn't anything new, nor anything they've tried to keep hidden?" If I missed something, please let me know. Did you know Peter Tribeman was one of one of the principals before this week? Who are the other principals and what are their real jobs?

You know what is also interesting is that 6 channel amp that AT has, 125 wpc. Is that an Outlaw design? At a list price of $1299, it might be a good 6 channel amp for the 1050's or the people who get 950's and want to save money.

I was a bit surprised about the 'day job' thing myself. I never fully researched it, I just skimmed over the stuff on the site before placing my first order. I always had the impression they were guys who were fed up and decided to start their own deal. Guess I was wrong. It doesn't change *too* much, though.

One thing I noticed under the link to the P-200 price, was the mention of an A-2000, a 6 channelx125w amp.

"Beneath the P-2000 is the A-2000 6-channel power amplifier. (Get it? A="Amplifier", and P="Processor". Pretty clever, no?) This is a 125 watts × 6 amplifier. It's expected to ship in the first quarter of 2002 priced at $1,299.00. Anyone spot a connection to an Outlaw? [JHG]"

I thought the 750 was 5x165w and the 770 will be 7x200w. Either the facts are a bit wrong, AT is using somebody else’s amp or there seems to be a modified version of something that Outlaw themselves aren't selling. Curious.

Any thoughts on the mystery amp?

S.

You don't see too many six channel amplifiers out there. Most 7.1 pre/pros are mono in the rears, but most people do use two speakers back there. Curious.

I think the Outlaw products has more in style with the NAD components, giving the green power button and the "kind of dorky" styling of both brands. It must be the M.I.T. connection of both brands.

One huge Outlaw/NAD connection is that Peter Tribeman was president of NAD from 1980-89.

You just give away their secret "Prestigious High End Audio Mfg" background.

Here's more from the Outlaw press conference at CES (I am the author of the SMR Group report mentioned elsewhere). Peter Tribeman stated that the relationship with their OEM (Eastech) is such that Outlaw designs the product and Eastech builds it, but the designs are not exclusive, so Eastech can manufacture them for others. I guess the benefit to Outlaw from this deal is that they get a cheaper price for their product which they can pass on to their customers.

From what we could tell at CES the Outlaw and Atlantic processors are identical in all but exterior cosmetics.

If this is the case, then perhaps somebody else could come along, get 950 innards from Eastech, and sell them quite cheaply indeed, as they did not have to spend the R&D money to come up with the designs. Sounds like a pretty raw deal for Outlaw to me... Unless there's more to it that I don't understand.

Unless Outlaw is getting the cheapest price from Eastech for the 950 innards; after all, they were the primary designers of the 950. The non-exclucivity deal with Eastech was probably done to bring the wholesale cost down for Outlaw; a savings they're passing on to their customers.

Sanjay (small world!) - that's really the only way that a deal like this works -- Outlaw gets preferential pricing, so that it can undercut those also selling the same design.

Yeah, but isn't there still the initial capital outlay to design the thing? Are they basically giving away their R&D work to Eastech in return for lower per-unit manufacturing costs?

Hi Nigel,

After watching you and Stuart become 'Gunslingers', I couldn't resist. The Saloon is one of the most civilized forums I've been to; very nice people.

According to what Outlaw has said, aside from being able to undercut the competition's price, they're also getting a period of exclucivity. From their last newsletter: "No other brand using anything derivative of the Model 950 will ship until ALL current reservations for the 950 have been filled, and perhaps for some time after that."(caps theirs)

All of which will come in handy for the Outlaws in this very competitive home theatre market.

Sanj

Matthew,

I don't think Outlaw is "giving away" anything. They're simply striking a deal with Eastech that is mutually beneficial to both companies. Since we don't know the details, I'm guessing that Outlaw is letting Eastech OEM their (Outlaw's) design in exchange for a better price and a period of exclucivity. Eastech gets a new product to sell; one that is already creating significant buzz. Outlaw gets to grab the lion's share of their market before the competition shows up; and even after competition comes along, Outlaw will still be able to keep the price of their competitive.

If Outlaw sells lots of their 950 processors, it still won't be a bad thing for Eastech. In fact they'll be able to use the 950's popularity when shopping their OEM unit to companies, like Atlantic Technologies, that want to sell a processor but aren't in the processor business.

I guess that sort of makes sense. I still don't completely understand, but I never had much of a head for business. I'll take y'all's word for it.
