Anyone recall any mention of a night mode for Dolby Digital, this is a great feature when you have a 17 month old child or spouse asleep in the next room!
P.S. After reading the updated faq that Matthew Hill pointed out , the 5 year warranty was something I must have missed before,OUTSTANDING!! and a cool logo with a green power button too!! Ye haa

I always wondered why night mode isn't available for all modes of operation. Don't you think that someone might want to use it with DTS or ProLogic?

I agree, but it really helps tone things down when a action scene comes on in Dolby Digital and my son is falling asleep! (oops)
I heard back from Scott , he informed me that the remote will be a Home Theater Master SL-8000!(COOL)My current H/K uses one and I like it quite a bit. This 950 just keeps getting better and better,on the updated faq I noticed that a cinema r-eq is also part of the specs(I missed that before too).Down at the very bottom of the page where credits are posted for Dolby and DTS there is mention of THX trademark, maybe the re-eq is a trademark of Lucas also , but I thought it was odd for Outlaw to mention"THX is a Lucas Films Trademark".

Are you sure that it's a SL-8000 and not a 9000? A non-learning remote would really a big step backwards from the 9000 that came with my Ref. 20.

I don't know why there isn't a "night mode" for DTS. It may be a proprietary software thing for DD that DTS chose not to implement. Then again, maybe other receivers out there have it, I don't know. For Pro-Logic, I know from first hand experience, the dynamic levels are much lower that the digital formats, thus it wouldn't do much. Pro-Logic sounds like it is in night mode all the time.

There is a "misprint" regarding cinema r-eq in that they state it is "to compensate for the rolloff in many movie soundtracks". In fact it is used to tame the brightness found in many movie soundtracks - just the opposite. No biggie, but it could be confusing for some.

I'm waiting for them to announce the inclusion of a kitchen sink. This is good news indeed!

As far as night mode goes, how about if you wanted to use it to listen to a CD or some other source? I'd think that night mode would be implemented as part of the normal DSP processing available to all sources, not as part of the DD decoding.

I asked Scott, and with a prompt reply he informed me that "night mode" will be part of the 950's Dolby Digital compliment.

From what I've read, "night" mode only works with Dolby Digital tracks that have dynamic range compression information already encoded in there; i.e., you can't take any DD track and apply night mode to it. This was part of the original spec for the Dolby Digital format. I don't think DTS has this provision.

Why not build into the 950's DSP a dynamic compression circuit that will operate on the decoded signal? That way you could use it for any source. I don't see why it needs to be built into the soundtrack.

My current H/K receivers night mode works with all Dolby Digital tracks, but does not work with DTS or any DSP modes.
