For those of us who are waiting for the 950, they've got pictures of the final unit up on the site now (not alpha unit pictures). Check it out...

Gonk,

How do you allways notice first? :-)

Now guys, as EVERYBODY is going to see this post from gonk soon ... I'll use it to get some help.

What's the cheapest hifi way to amplify the signal from a 950? how about this crazy idea: I buy 950 AND 1050 and use the internal 1050's amp to get good sound ... I would do it by plugging the 950's output to the analog 1050 input (prcessing OFF) and from there to the speakers?

Sorry if that comes out to be stupid, just trying to save some $$$$$

Repply if you can ...

I'm going to suggest you just buy the 1050 and save up until you can afford seperates.

You might be able to find a used Outlaw 750, but you should not skimp on the amp section IMO.

I'm just quick, I guess...

As for using the 1050 as an amp, you've apparently already caught on to the fact that you'd have to use the 5.1 analog in, which would go straight to the amp section but would leave you without amplification for the surround back channels. It'd work, but it's not really ideal. You could always buy two 1050's and get ten channels of amplification (drive a passive sub, bi-amp your mains and center channel by splitting the pre-amp out signal), but at that point I'd recommend just buying a 750 instead (I've probably said it way too many times now, but I simply picked up a used 2-channel amp from Audiogon for the surround back and use a 750 for the main five channels). I'll leave it to others to try to come up with ideas for inexpensive home theater amps (6 or 7 channel, or a 5 channel and a 2 channel) -- anybody know of a sub-$1000 amp with 6 or 7 channels that's worth messing with?

By the way, I've updated the pre/pro chart again -- I'm currently considering it "done"; there are a few other pre/pros and receivers that could be worth including, but it's getting hard to read so I don't think I'll add any more without re-arranging it completely (break it into multiple smaller charts, probably, so I can put the pre/pros along the left edge).

Funny. I kept imagining it with more logos on the front, considering all the things it does. *shrug*

For the amp considerations, I went with a B stock 750 ($949 shipped - wait list < 30 days). Currently looking for a ATI 1502 for rears or 2 Marantz MA500's. This will put you at $1250ish. Another option Carver 705x $600ish plus cheap 2 channel in the 100watt range (parasound, rotel...). For 6 channel 2 Acurus A200x3 for about $1000 - $1200 used.

Cool, now if they just would post the manual and some photos of the remote it might hold us over for a bit longer.

Gonk,

A question if I may ... The second sentance of your page reads "... It started as a question raised in the Outlaw Forum (specifically this thread), but doesn't really achieve the lofty goals set forth there. ...". Do you mean the 950 doesn't really achieve its goals or that your chart doesn't? Not quite clear.

Personally I suspect the 950 to come as close to its target goals as the 1050 came to its and, in all honesty, I think your chart is pretty close to the goals that you set for it - publically at least.

Thanks,

Of course as soon as it is released I will be complaining about waiting for the 770. There is just no pleasing some people!

The chart -- the idea was to compare specs and performance. I agree that the sentence isn't clear, I was trying to make clear that the chart only tells have of the story. I also agree that the sense I get is that the 950 is going to meet and exceed Outlaw's goals for it.

(Edit -- I tweaked the wording. Just can't leave well enough alone.)

I have an idea for a system setup. Connect the 950 to active speakers (I'm looking at Paradigm's Reference Active speakers, which have been discontinued, yet which still are in dealers' showrooms). You save a ton of money by not getting the amp, and most manufacturers acknowledge that active speakers sound better than passive. Just a thought.

There is no way that 5/7 amps are cheaper than one, such as an Outlaw Model 750/770 for example. If the powered speakers are cheaper than the equivalent amp/speaker combo then corners were cut.
If you really like this idea you might check out ACI, another internet only outlaw.

They has a powered speaker line.
The only major sonic advantages come with bi-amp or tri-amp using active crossovers and multiple amps. Linkwitz has some good info.

Tri-amp? So, you're talking 15-21 monoblocks? Yeah, I've got the cash sitting around for that.

I think the only ACI powered speakers are the subs, the bass module of the new center and the LFMs designed to work with the Jags.
