Relay Racks vs 990 dimensions-Hey MeanGeane

I looked at your rack at:

http://groups.msn.com/MeanGenesHome/hometheater.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=169

Looks like you have a standard EIA-spaced relay rack with 19" standard panels. Some eqpt (950 included) is sitting on shelves. I prefer standard racks like this but have yet to locate shelves which will accomodate the depth of the 990 pre/pro or 775, both of which I'm getting.
The 950 depth is 14.76 in. I need one which accomodates 18 in depth. Width is no problem.

Do you have any sources/suggestions for shelving to accomodate 990. If you convert you'll need it, too.

I like this kind of rack due to versatility. Nothing against outlaw's stuff.
Thanks.

nfaguys,

I plan to use a Middle Atlantic custom 775 shelf for my 990, the specs seem to be a close fit. If you wish a lower cost rack try this site.

Thanks paratrooper. I checked out the link you gave. Looks like there are some that would do fine, though their weight rating is a bit lower than outlaw weights.

Here is all I could find. Midatlantic's text listing. I assume the small # is the # of RU's

OUTLAW MODEL 755 5 17.5
OUTLAW MODEL 950 4 15.5
OUTLAW MODEL 770 5 17.5

And all I could find was this with no pictures or other info. Have you found a link with pics?
Pricing would be interesting, too. I'm getting a 990 and 755. Accordingly it appears that two of their 755 units would do, though I would like to know how it would look with 990. Outlaw lists 990 width slightly wider than 755 width. Height listed is the same. So five RU's are 8.75 inches..That's a full 1 inch higher than either the 990 or 755. So this gives a bit of air space above....a good thing :-)

If one had enough RACK Height, a 1 RU (1.75") would go well above for more ventilation. And I really prefer (always have) a real EIA Standard rack because (1) standard spacing; (2) Lots of my gear is spaced that way; (3) Connections can be hidden [from wife :-)]. (4) Connections can more readily (I think) be routed in a rack with sides to cable-tie against so that audio is kept away from 110 AC...at least not allowed to run parallel.

Anyway if you or anyone has pics or can give me link to Midatlantic's product housing/holding an outlaw product I'd be grateful...and thanks.

I have a Middle Atlantic 755 shelf in a rack awaiting a 990 to slide in, and see how it fits. I will post when the 990 arrives?? I plan to sell my 950 custom shelf with my 950. I have no pix as I am waiting for the 990 before installing the rack system.

I think lots of us will be both interested and grateful for the upcoming pic. Meanwhile it's time to make measurements in inches and in RU's, knowing the dimensions I'll need 10.5 will give me the 5 RU from MIDATLANTIC, with 1 inch. A blank panel would give more ventilation, especially a vent panel 1.75", for a total of 10.5 (6 RU). I think I'll have sufficient spaces for 2 10.5 inch installations, though the 990 shouldn't generate as much heat. Probably won't need the extra RU. Oh well. We'll see.
Great forum...and thanks.

If I read your post correctly, you are planning for just 1.75 inches of space above your 755. I would talk to the Outlaws before doing this. I believe Steve told me to allow for at lesst 4 inches. I am going to use a 3 RU vented panel over my 755.

If Steve says at least 4 inches that's what it will be. I discovered that I have a rack, currently in use with other equipment and some "rack cabinets" (smaller) so I can switch them around. The 10.5 (6 RU) referred to above was just some simple computation. I will certainly use his recommendations.

5 RU = 8.75 in.
6 RU = 10.5 in.
775 = 7.75 in.

Using 5 RU for 775 leaves maybe 1 inch above (allowing for feet---and I haven't seen the config'n for the MidAtlantic panel).

Another 2 RU = 3.50 in. So if there is at least 1/2 inch above the top of the 775 there would by calculation be 4 inches vent'n space with a total of 7 RU for the amp. Sp a 2 RU ventilated panel above the MidAtlantic should do. Your thoughts, pls.

Also, are there recommendations for required space above the 990? Thanks.

I haven't seen any recommendations yet, but I plan to give mine an inch to inch and a half above it to breath.

The Middle Atlantic shelf is 5RU and a 2RU vent should be enough. I am placing my 775 in a separate 8RU rack, therefore my reason for using a 3RU vent. I have planned for a 1RU vent above my 990, I hope than my planning works out.

to SCOTT or STEVE:
Is there any possibility that you outlaws will make rack ears for the 990?
It says 17.38 inches. Considering its heigh and weight, it ought to be possible to mount in standard 19 inc rack with ears.

If "no" could you please tell us why. Thanks
