I rec'd my LFM-1 last night, and after installing the spikes, and turning it over, I noticed how low it sat to the ground, hardly any clearance at all from the floor, does anyone know if this sub is designed to sit very low to the floor, I would think that the closeness to the floor would inhibit the woofer movement and port performance, any opinions or knowledge of this would help. Thanks alot !!

From what I understand of the manual, the spikes are designed specifically to provide the required clearance for the driver and ports. Did you set it on the isolation discs? If you are concerned about clearance and haven't already tucked the discs under the spikes, you might try that.

I did leave out that i have pretty thick carpet, so when i put it down with just the spike, it was so low that the woofer would be actually hitting the ground as it started recoiling, so i did put the discs down under it, but it still seems awfully low compared to my klipsch sub on the other side.

It's probably OK with the discs, but it wouldn't hurt anything to get a ruler out, measure your clearance is between carpet and the underside of the LFM-1, and bounce the number off Outlaw.

I have the same issue. I ended up cutting a piece of 1" board the exact size of the sub, painting it black and setting the LFM-1 on that. It seemed to tighten up the bass a bit.

I don't have my LFM1 yet but I do have access to 7/8" black granite at my work and I can cut it any size I want. Maybe I'll try a piece of that under my LFM1.

I have 2 forward firing subwoofers but my friends are down firing. He had 2 pieces of mirror cut to size and glued them to 3/4 MDF and it looks sweet you can see the sub and it did tighten up the sound a bit. Just my .02 cents. Hope this helps

Well guys, I know that most of my female acquaintances can hold their own when it comes to things like this. Pardon the pun.

I had an interesting experience recently. I've been listening to music on my 950/lfm based 5.1 system upstairs for several months now. The sound, especially with a well-mixed/engineered sacd like "Rainbow Bridge" is outstanding. Recently I played that hybrid sacd on my living room stereo...not a shabby setup either. Lo and behold: the stereo sounded gutless and thin in comparison! What happened IMHO is that I've gotten used to the sound of the lfm sub in my ht. It's become integrated into the sound I expect to hear. I'm now used to steak; hamburger won't do anymore!

Anyone else have a similar experience?

It would not really surprise me - one way or the other.

With capable full-range speakers running in plain old stereo mode, you may or may not notice the presence, or absence, of a sub (or subs) depending on source material and other factors like room acoustics etc.

In my main system I'm hard-pressed to notice a difference between subs out and subs in, in stereo (with front mains set to large / small 40Hz respectively.) About the only way that I can tell the difference if I were to walk into the room not knowing the current settings, is to lay a hand on the subs to "feel" if they active.

Now 5.1 movies are a whole different ballgame - because of the LFE signal. (Not the redirected bass since I run everything large across the front - except for the opening credits in the Hulk, which is the only soundtrack that I've ever played at my "normal" levels that caused my centre array audible distress. Running them small 40 Hz for that movie cured the problem.) Removing the LFE signal is more than noticeable - it's lunch bag letdown in the worst way.

So to return to your post, it seems that your sub is making a true contribution in stereo mode - either because your mains are either not capable of, or are not set up to, reproduce the usual low bass in stereo recordings. No surprise that you'd notice its absence.

(ps. So why not add another LFM-1 to the living room stereo system? Move your existing one to see how it sounds. Might be a worthwhile upgrade!)

From my perspective; I feel that it is pretty rare that any system will not benefit from a good dedicated sub. I love my Tempest sub in my system. My brother who listens to basically classical felt he probably won't benefit from a sub in his system. Which has Paradigm Ref. 80 speakers. Wrong! He said he couldn't believe how the sound filled in so much fuller with a sub. Of course the benefit is only realized with a good sub. I've heard many boomy boxes that make me cringe.
Morale of the story: A good sub will give you great benefits.

AMEN to that brother !!!! I'm all about the subs, it makes a huge difference.

I'm a strong believer in the old "it's better to ask for forgiveness than to beg for permission" adage.

(I once was able to hide a new sub in a corner, under an end table, and behind a sofa in my family room for months before my wife noticed!)

I missed the deleted post but I'm guessing that curegeorg was at it again. There seems to be no cure. Anyway, has anyone done a direct comparison between the LFM1 and the Velodyne spl 1200. I have a friend with one of those and it sounds GREAT! I just couldn't stand it if my new sub didn't keep pace. On the other hand, if it sounds as good and costs less I earn bragging rights.

Velodyne's been making good subs for a long time, so there's some security there (for example, our very own curegeorg is a staunch advocate of Velodyne). The LFM-1 looks like it will cost you less, and since you've got a buddy with the Velodyne you could always get an LFM-1 and run it through the 30-day trial -- see how they compare. Speaking as one of the LFM-1 owners around here, I suspect you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's a very nice sub.

Thanks Gonk, I am pretty well set on doing exactly that. In fact, after reading your previous posts, I feel confident that I will like it. No serious offense to Curegeorg of course....as I said, I missed the bad post so I have no idea what was said. He has good taste in subs anyway....I love my buddy's even though he says he really wanted an M&K but didn't think it was worth twice the money. I'm hoping to find the same thing with the LFM1. I will take the suggestion to mount it on a nice piece of plywood or something to get clearance from my carpet since it is thick. Sounds like that should keep it as tight as possible. Can't wait to hear my Studio 40s with the LFM1. They sound great on their own but when I heard them with the Velodyne I couldn't believe how they sounded. If the LFM1 is in the same league I know I will love it.

keep this in mind with subs, no matter how much rms power or peak power your sub can manufacture, it must be clean and it must be controlled.

Among others, I currently run two older Velodyne Servo 1200's in my main theatre. They, and other Velodyne products, are incredible subs, and Velodyne is my favourite sub maker.

Having said that, and to be consistent with my other posts, if Outlaw were to open a Canadian distributorship, I would have no hesitation in buying at least one, and possibly two, of them.

You've got a real tough choice to make.

ahh, good old american censorship. its nice to know we are being watched (maybe listened to, i hope at least somewhat). there are a lot of subs in the lfm1 price range, a bunch of which are pretty good.

The only post that I was aware of being deleted from this thread was by VADER, and the deletion was entirely proper as the post was a complete and utter waste of bandwidth.

Thanks for the responses. I've been out to Best Buy getting a new laptop since my old one decided that viewing the screen was no longer necessary. That puts a little crimp in my budget though. I had just gotten approval for my sub and then the computer goes south. Isn't that always the way? I am considering the forgiveness vs permission option but in my experience wives have VERY long memories. Not sure I care to have that conversation for the rest of my life! Especially when a few weeks of moping will probably get the pitty approval. Anyway, I am set on giving the LFM1 a shot. I just have to hear what eveyone is talking about. Everyone here knows their stuff and if it passes your hearing tests that is good enough for me.

Sorry for sparking up the censorship thing. I am always amazed to see how many people think that everything that can be said should be said.

One last note. If anyone is looking for a really nice laptop for a reasonable price, Best Buy....yes Best Buy has an eMachines M6805 that runs the new Mobile Athlon64 3000+ processor for $1250 after $250 in rebates. Trust me, you aren't going to find anything this nice for this price anywhere and I work in an IT room full of Gateways, Dells, Sonys, and Toshibas. Forget 'em...buy the eMachines. It's got the Mobility 9600 graphics card too! Ok, enough of the computer geek stuff....back to the music.

re eMachines: can't comment on their portables (since I'm a big Sony Vaio fan when it comes to portables) however two of the desktop systems in my home network are older eMachines products. They were incredible value then - and still are. I have nothing but praise for them. And when a power supply started to act up on one of them, their customer service rep was very helpful in getting me a replacement.

re the begging for forgiveness "Outlaw" approach: I'm all for it. However, unlike my once hiding a new sub under a table and behing a couch where it took my wife a few months to notice it, this weekend I indulged a minor mid-life crisis and bought a type of used car that I've wanted for years. I've spent all the rest of the weekend working my wife's gardens and flower beds for her - saving up those attaboys - since I'm not sure where I'm going to hide the car when I take delivery later this week!

I'm going to give it a try....maybe the pre-purchase attaboy will work out. I've always made the buy then taken my lumps and worked it off later but planning ahead and getting in good graces before hand might work better. Hmmmm.....if the rain ever stops here I'll have to get out the shovels and do some landscaping.

Well, I went with the permission path and whined like Geoge Castanza. Whatever, it worked and my sub is on the way. Actually I ordered two because my brother wanted one too and with the free shipping offer we got them delivered with a cable for $570. You just can't beat that. Can't wait to get it hooked up.
