painttoad, i checked out polk audio's surround speakers. they don't sell fx500's anymore.the similar models are the fxi5 at 599.00,20-125 watts, and the fxi3 at 419.00,20-150 watts.def. tech bpx- 899.00,15-350 watts.polk also has the lsifx series at 1149.99,20-200 watts.pricing as pairs.

hmmm, really don't know what to tell you.just demo before you buy(30 days in home is ideal),but,if i was buying surround speakers,i would want to listen to them using them as mains.(with sub,of course).for the kind of money you are quoting, those surrounds should perform VERY well as mains!(may have to tweak bass management to get them to blend in)it's really gonna be up to you and $$$.just demo and don't take the salesman's word!

The DefTech BPX's are bipoles - wouldn't want to demo them as mains. Same with the Polks.

I'd tend toward the Polks since they are most likely to match your existing Polk speakers, but as painttoad suggests, it would be good to get the chance for an in-home demo.

gonk, what i suggested was only to get a feel for the speakers,if they sound good up front they will be fine in back,if they sound so-so up front they may still perform in the rear, but for that kind of money(they seem to be pretty proud)i'd want a kick butt pair of speakers!i would wanna rock 'em up front to make sure they 'are all that',know what i mean?

look at me,i'm runnin' 601's up front, when the time and $$$ comes, they'll go to the rear(and perform!)
