We just watched Harry Potter and my 950 would not lock onto 5.1 dolby. It would only play in stereo. I purchased the unit used late last year. I vaguely remember that there were some issues with earlier production units. Is the problem I was having due to one of those problems? The unit was hooked up using the optical connection from the DVD player to the 950. Otherwise te unit has performed flawlessly.
Thanks
John

dumb question but it must be asked:how is your dvd bitstream configured?
dvd menu;audio;pcm/dd digital/dts
pcm is 2-ch.
i can't explain it like gonk.

i can't get the link to work, but if you go to the 1050 archives, there's a post by me called: 1050 and dts, where gonk walked me through.hope it helps smile

Painttoad is faster than I am..Like he says, your DVD player is configurable in the way that the signal is passed to your pre/pro, so try that first. I had the same issue in my first foray with Digital surround sound.

This, of course, assumes that the not locking on part is in the fact that the menu on the 950 doesn't allow the selection of surround sound, instead of Surround sound is selected for the input but not coming out of the speakers. If the latter happens to be the case, note that you can configure all but the main speakers to "none" in the 950 menu, which could cause that problem.

If those two don't work, I hope something else does. Hate to think that someone with enough taste to buy outlaw would sell a bad unit! frown

Some of the older DVDs have issues, as well as some of the older players. My first, a Pioneer Elite LD/DVD, would sometimes set subtitles on a movie automatically. If your other films work OK, you may want to check the sound options on the Harry Potter DVD after you load it to see if they're defaulting some other way.

The Model 1050 had problems with EX flagged soundtracks and the proprietary 6.1 Surround mode. The very first batch of 950's shipped out (as in the first few dozen at most) had a chip in the DSP that would sometimes overheat due to a voltage/chip mismatch and cause a brief dropout from time to time, but that was resolved and all affected units replaced.

Have any other discs displayed this behavior? Also, which Harry Potter disc is it?

Not sure if this is relevant, but once you go into stereo it's hard to get back out with the 950. If I put any kind of DVD into a player and switch to stereo mode, I will have to press the Dolby button multiple times to get it back to Dolby, it will constantly try to remain in stereo unless I do that. Maybe you have something similar happening.
