I just sold my Harmon Kardon avr 40 and I am concidering the 1050. I currently run NHT super zeros with a powered NHT SW2Si sub, paradigm center, and energy surrounds. Do you think the 1050 is a wise choise? Thanks for any input!

Honestly I think the 1050 is well made and has many great points, but at this time I could not recommend it unless you're mostly looking for a music system. The s-video issues and other minro quirks add up to too many minuses to me, and I'm actually a 1050 owner.

The 1050 is very well made, and has excellent sound quality for the price range. Having now heard Dolby Digital EX, I am of the opinion that the 1050's "Surround 6.1" processing is easily as good as the official EX processing. The s-video issues that have given charlie problems are not universal (I used nothing but S-video connections with my 1050 for a year and a half without trouble), so they may or may not be a problem for you. The 30-day money back guarantee does offer a chance to send it back and get a rebate if you decide that it is a problem for you. I still think it's a pretty good value, depending on your need. If you want a music system, the 1050 is an excellent choice. For DVD watching, the 1050 is also very, very good. If you want a system for satellite, cable, and video tape viewing, you may find yourself drawn to Pro Logic II equipped receivers in the same price range. Whether or not PLII appeals to you in that case is a matter of personal preference, but it is definitely a step up from the original Pro Logic processing. There have been some discussion threads recently regarding some similarly-priced PLII receivers.

Would these s-video problems be covered under the 5yr. warranty?

I'd second gonk.

Obviously I have s-video issues, but everything he said, IMO, is fair and correct. Just be sure you try the s-video before your 30 days are up - I wasn't aware of the issue and did not.

Good question! Anyone?

I would suspect no, since Outlaw noted in this thread (see Scott's August 2, 2001 post) that the problem was due to other components with s-video signals that are output at a higher voltage than the industry standard. I could be wrong though, and a call to Outlaw could confirm one way or the other.

Go ahead and buy a 1050 and give it a trail run. Why? It sounds better. I had a nice receiver picked out and it had PLII and more power and it was close in price too. My wife said " Buy that one, its got everything you want" but I said "it doesnt sound as good though" she got up and looked straight at me and said "well thats it then." -nuff said-
