Has anyone tried to use the 950 with a receiver as the amplifier? I have a Denon AVR-1600 which has served me well but is short of inputs and features. Of course, I would prefer also buying a separate amp but finances might dictate otherwise. The Denon has 6 channel input so my understanding is that I would just connect the 950 through that, set the volume at an appropriate level and then work exclusively through the 950. Is this way off the mark? Does anyone have any experience with something like this?

Thanks

When I ordered my 950/7100 combo I received the 950 almost two weeks before the 7100 and since I couldn't wait :-), I hooked up the 950 to a Marantz 870 receiver until the 7100 arrived. It was definitely a step up from my old system (Denon AVR-3600), but I REALLY like the 7100 better.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. A more technical question. If I do go with this setup, should the sub be connected to the Denon or to the 950. The sub is powered.

Connect it to the 950. There's no need to involve the Denon in that.

I agree with gonk - that's how I did it and it worked fine (this is the same way that you'll do it if/when you get an Outlaw amp).

How do you do that? Add the 950 on top of the receiver. I'd love to know so that I can start off with the 950 while I save the pennies for the 7100. Thanks!

It's not an ideal configuration, but it can be done -- if the receiver has a 5.1 analog input. If it does, you can connect the 950's pre-amp outputs to that input, select that input on the receiver, set the receiver's volume to one position and leave it there, and you have a crude but effective amp. Some receivers also include a set of direct amp inputs that bypass everything in the receiver and connect directly to the receiver's amp section. This is pretty rare, though.
