We rented Road to Perdition and when I loaded the disk, I had the audio set to 6-Channel (DVD-A) analog input. It sounded great! Better than DD.

What gives?

I'm not sure I'm following you. Are you saying that the DVD video of "Road to Perdition" gives you DVD-Audio output? Are you sure you aren't confusing Dolby Surround EX with DVD-Audio?

If you are doing an analog bypass, and your dvd player has Dolby Digital or DTS decoding (or both) the DVD player will be outputting a decoded Dolby Digital (or DTS) signal to your preamp, not a decoded MLP (DVD-A) signal.

Why it may sound better to your ears? I have no idea. Different DAC chips, different decoding software resulting in an emphesis on different frequencies that you find more pleasing then the software in your pre/reciever. A combination of both...something completly different? It's hard to say. But I'm pretty sure your not getting a DVD-A signal out of Road to Perdition.

Dan,

You're definitely not hearing DVD-A content. If the 'Road to Perdition' DVD had 6 channels of losslessly packed 96/24 PCM data, there would be no room for the video signal. Your experience, though, seems to indicate that you preferred how the DD decoding was doen in your DVD player compared to the DD decoding in your processor. Surprising.

Best,
Sanjay
