I just received my 1050 and find that the display is extremely difficult to read because the elements that aren't lit are still interfering with the elements that are lit. Is this common or do I have a bad unit?

I've never experienced this. My display is always quite easy to read and very clear as to what is and is not illuminated.

Could be odd lighting conditions in your room perhaps? Many displays, for example, react badly to direct sunlight.
