I tried it (as I have an iMac). It was the usual well-done Apple implementation. Looks like the basis of a good business model.

BUT, I sent them an email letting them know I will not be using it, as they only download the files in AAC 128 level compression. What's worse, iTunes would not let me convert it to an MP3! So if I want to burn it to a CD for my car MP3 player I am out of luck.

Personally, I would be much more interested in downloads if they were uncompressed WAV files, but I doubt the paranoid music industry will go for that! The least Apple could do is let the consumer choose the method and level of compression.

Hopefully Apple will improve on their download site.

Uncompressed .wav files would take a long time to download, even over a typical home type dsl or cable modem connection.

Non-lossy compression would help some, but would only get you a factor of about two improvement.

I just cant see paying on the order of 50 cents to a dollar for .mp3 level of quality (or lack of it) music. I used napser to locate (find out the real title and author) a song so I could then buy the CD. Oftentimes, I had just part of a title or part of the author's name. Napster allowed me to find and buy the music I was looking for.

Since the demise of napster, I have purchased less.
