Upgrading Opinions

I currently own two 970's. Both have had issues and regardless of what Outlaw has told me. There are problems with them and they haven't been able to find/fix them so I've given up.
My question is, why should I consider a 976 instead of a Denon AVR-X3600 with pre outs since I am already running a couple different amps and want to stay with that setup.

I also had a model 970 with a 7075. It was a great alternative to using a receiver. I felt the sound quality was an improvement over using a receiver. At times, I did find the unit glitchy - especially with any optical inputs. Video switching worked well (and there was a shorter delay than the 976). It worked for me and then I lent it to a friend who also used it. Between using the 970, I have used a few receivers as preamps - Denon and Yamaha both were models 1 down from flagship and they worked well. I am now using the 976. While I was more than happy with using receivers as preamps, the 976 was still a step up in sound quality. The interface of the receivers was always better than the 976 both in front display and OSD/menu. The delay in switching sources is about the same. The receivers offer far more options in terms of connectivity. If you want a work horse type pre/pro, go with Outlaw. It is simple to use with better than receiver sound quality. While I prefer the sound of separates, if the 976 stopped working, I would go back to a Denon or Yamaha as a preamp.
To answer your question - sound quality, connectivity, interface, budget and personal preference are the considerations between a dedicated pre/pro and all in one receiver.
If you go with the 3600, I would be curious to read your thoughts.

I think you answered all my concerns. It's a difficult decision for me. The difference in price is only $100, but it seems I have more options with the 3600. Now that Denon has introduced a new 2020 model the 3600 may come down even more in the next few months.
I am assuming using as a pre-out only, the heat wouldn't be an issue. I am not looking to any of the Denon's internal amps at the moment, but there is always that option.

Dave: I am in the same boat but looking at the 3700 as it will allow one to shut off all internal amps and use as a dedicated preamp. It's a tough call but the Denon has many features I will never use such as Atmos and multizone capability, plus there's a lot going on in these boxes with a limited power supply. For these reasons I am leaning toward the 976, I just think it's going to sound better in the end.

Has the 976 had any promotion since being released without any package deals? I'm certainly not ruling it out but if any of you think they may have any price cut around the holidays, that would certainly make my decision easier. Thanks Guys.
