OSD does not work with active HDMI cable

OSD does not work with active HDMI cable - 03/25/20 02:31 PM

I recently purchased the 976 to replace a broken 975. For some reason, the OSD display from the 976 does not work well on my LG TV over this cable. I ended up having to connecting to an older Visio TV via a HDMI 1080p High Speed HDMI cable to do the initial setup. Once I did the setup, everything worked great. Specifically, the Roku displayed a 4k 60FPS HDR picture, I believe with 4.2.2 (this doesn't show) The BluRay player displays a 1080P HDR picture (its limits). The Cable set-top box works great.

However, when I tried to go to the OSD setup to start really dialing in the the audio, the screen goes blank. Sometimes it will display the main menu for a few seconds and I can select a option menu and then it goes blank and sometimes displays that screen. I can seldom do more than 1 thing before it does away completely and I have to try to start over. Any thoughts on what is causing this and what I can do to remedy this?

FWIW, and to further confuse the issue, if I use an older 1080p rated high speed passive HDMI cable (which cannot carry the 4K picture from the Roku) the OSD displays just fine. Of course, I then run into HDMI handshake issues when I try to go back to the active cable.

I have opened this as a ticket in the support system and am waiting on an acceptable explanation and workaround. It boggles my mind that a 4k picture and 1080p and 1080i sources will work but the OSD will not.

I am running the following configuration:

- The 976 HDMI1 Output/ARC is connected to my LG TV's HDMI2/ARC via a Wireworld Sphere 15M Active HDMI cable (this cable, which is certified for 4K HDR 4.2.2, has its own power source).
- Media Input - Roku Ultra via a passive .5m 4K HDMI cable setup on HDMI 1
- Disk Input - Samsung BD-D5500 BluRay via a passive .5m 4K HDMI cable setup on HDMI 2
- Cbl/Sat Input - Arris 6 Channel whole house DVR via a passive .5m 4K HDMI cable setup on HDMI 5
- AUX - Amazon Dot to 976 Analog input 1

With HDMI connectivity, it's two-way communication throughout your HDMI connected system. You might have a problem with any of your HDMI connected devices. I would suggest disconnecting all the input HDMI cables and see if you still have the problem with only your 4k cable going to the TV. If it works then, connect one input device at a time to see if either of them are causing interruption. Have you tried cleaning the cable ends with a cleaner solution? That might help if one cable works while the other does not.

Try going into the system setup menu under HDMI control and turn off the CEC and see if that helps. It is a convoluted system that tries to coordinate all your HDMI connected devices. Just a shot in the dark.

I have tried disconnecting the source HDMI cables, but there was no difference in how the OSD displayed. The 4K cable is also brand new and not dirty.

What's bizzare is that the cable works great for everything but the OSD. If there was a dirty or broken pin, you would think that it would impact something else besides just the OSD. But the ARC works as does the transmission of the off command from the TV to the 976 over HDMI.

The only thing left I can think of is the output resolution of the OSD. Maybe the LG is having problems seeing this lower resolution. My Vizio shows it as 480p.

Thanks for the feedback. While its a pain to use this way, the LG displays the 976's OSD just fine with a 1080p rated passive cable. I suspect that there is something about the active portion of the 4K cable that is causing the issue. I got the active cable to support 4K from my Roku and ARC. They both work fine as does the 1080P signal from my older BluRay player.

I am curious if anyone else is using an active HDMI cable between the 976 and your TV or projector. I am especially interested if you are able to get both 4K, ARC and the 976's OSD to work. If so can you please let me know what type of cable it is and the length of the cable as well as the model of the TV or projector.

You're on to something. The active cable must be the difference. It's a big jump to upscale from 480p to 4k. I see your active cable is 15 meters. If that's the necessary length, you would need an active cable. I'm using a 12ft 18Gbps non-active cable and have no problems with OSD.
