976 and SMS-1 - 07/03/19 11:02 AM

Is there any reason/benefit to using the SMS-1 bass management unit with the 976 processer? I have the SMS-1 from an older system.

Although I do not own a 976 I would expect the SMS1 would complicate things since the 976 has a good selection of crossover frequencies for bass management in addition to the PEQ. You would have to feed the SMS1 from the sub outs and that would essentially put two competing devices in the subwoofers stream which would be difficult I would think to get right.

Advantage to using the SMS1 is that it can EQ and level 3 subs independently, the 976 has 2 outputs but only 1 sub eq and trim. I agree that setup could get complicated/confusing between the many crossover and EQ settings present on the 976 and the SMS1 but if you have 2 or more subs there appears to be a well thought out benefit to making the effort.

Edited: I have read the Outlaws guide to the SMS1 and while it has multiple sub outputs, there is only 1 EQ and trim. Paired with a 976 the SMS1 is a self contained alternative to using Room EQ Wizard for EQing the sub.

Thanks for your thoughts, may have to try with and without the SMS-1.
