Obviously the 976 will no longer provide any digital processing. From the manual:

DSP Bypass: This is set to “Off ” by default and allows the Model 976 to apply surround processing, but can be turned “On” to defeat any surround processing modes. The available choices are: On → Off

This refers to post processing, such as any of the Dolby Prologic II or DTS Neo choices. With this switched on it will only decode the Direct audio format that's received.

Thanks to both of you. The reason I asked is I did not notice any difference and was wondering if I am missing something.
