There's been no official word from Outlaw, but I'll stick with my earlier estimates: if we see anybody selling an HDMI v1.3 processor before 2008, I'll be deeply impressed. After all, we haven't even seen HDMI v1.3 receivers from the giant electronics makers (Sony, Matsushita, Toshiba, Onkyo, Pioneer, ...) at this point.

What really sucks is that as soon as 1.3 is cemented as "the format," a newer version will come out.

At this point, I want at least two HDMI outputs anyway, so I hope that's also something Outlaw will consider. I really don't want an external switcher for my plasma and projector. I'd easily take two outputs at 1.1 that can do audio and video, over a single output at 1.3

At least HDMI should be settled down for a bit with v1.3, as there are no immediate plans in the pipeline for major revisions (unlike when v1.1 and v1.2 were released while v1.3 was known to be "just around the corner" and nobody knew how HDMI would work with the then-unreleased HD formats).

I agree that a second HDMI output would be popular, but I suspect that we're only likely to see that on something that would be a 990 replacement - if they keep the two-processor product line, a 970 replacement will probably only offer a single HDMI output. And I wonder what the HDCP handshake issues might be when trying to do two video outputs? It should be feasible, but how would that negotiation work? Would only one be able to operate at a time?

True, it has settled a bit, but by the time the receivers and processors which incorporate 1.3 are available, enough time may have passed...

I'm fine with one output active at a time, because I can only watch one display at a time. And I'm all for a 990 replacement, I don't think I could go for less. I would also like to see better connectors, not that Outlaw necessarily has anything responsibility in that area.

Personally, I don't care too much about what spec of HDMI that is in any of my devices, as long as I have a receiver that can receive 7.1 LPCM and a player and/or PC that will take the lossless versions of DTS/DD and convert those to the LPCM to send to it.

All the rest of that stuff doesn't matter all that much to me.

(And yes, I'm crossing my fingers that the ATI R600 video cards will allow this because they'll be the first cards to output HDMI audio from a PC.)

Here's a receiver with HDMI 1.3a that supposedly ships in May. (Does anybody know what the "a" means?)

This sort of came up in this thread the other day. I haven't heard anything abotu the "a" revision to HDMI. Going to be interesting to start seeing hardware with v1.3 running.

Q. What is the difference between HDMI 1.3 and HDMI 1.3a, or 1.3b?

For consumers, there is no difference between HDMI version 1.3 and 1.3a or 1.3b. These minor revisions to the specification typically relate to manufacturing or testing issues and do not impact features or functionality. In addition, HDMI Licensing, LLC is actively working with manufacturers to reduce confusion for consumers by de-emphasizing version numbers and focusing instead on product features and functionality.

For Adopters, the latest HDMI Specification is v1.3a and the latest HDMI Compliance Test Specification (CTS) is 1.3b1.
