Look for Rane or Audio Control. They are the two companies that make excellent HT equalizers. I use the 5.2 channel Audio Control Bijou and am very happy with it.
However, I would suggest acoustic treatment first and use the EQ as a finishing touch to compliment the treatments. EQs are definately not end all solutions and can screw things up worse if not properly implemented.

Doug917 makes a good point about acoustic treatment.
Our living room is hexagonal shaped. For various reasons it is not always amenable to acoustic treatments. I imagine that closing the drapes softens up the room some. EQ helps. And with a programmable EQ you can set up different programs for different kinds of material. I really miss EQ and the ease of front panel panning...but love the 990, otherwise.
