975 Doesn't play well with Oppo UDP-203 HDMI audio

975 Doesn't play well with Oppo UDP-203 HDMI audio - 12/19/16 10:13 PM

I just got my Oppo UDP-203 today and I'm having issues with HDMI audio and my 975.

I have the Oppo HDMI out directly connected to my TV and the audio out connected to the 975. When I first hooked this up, I was not able to get the audio to work. I called tech support and after messing around with the input settings, the audio started working just fine until I turned everything off.

This evening, when I turned everything back on, the audio was not working agin. After playing around, I discovered that you have to go into the 975 input settings, switch the HDMI mapping to an unused HDMI port, back out of the OSD, go back into the OSD, and switch the input mapping back to the HDMI port that the audio out from the Oppo is connected to. Once you do that, you get audio.

I'll be giving tech support another ring in the morning to update my findings and hopefully between Outlaw and Oppo there will be a firmware fix for this.

Congratulations on your new Oppo. I don't have a clue what might be amiss between the UDP-203 and the 975 (it sounds like a handshake issue) but I'm sure Outlaw and Oppo will figure it out.

I'm curious about the new Oppo and its performance. What do you think of what you've seen so far? What display are you using?

FWIW, loss of audio is 99% likely to be the result of a failed HDCP handshake. Standard HDMI handshake troubleshooting would apply. If that's the case, simply changing the AVR to a different input and back again could resolve it, or shutting the AVR off and back on.

In the way of resolution, powering the devices on in different order might find a fix.

Switching the inputs does not work, nor does powering on in a different order.

Hello Bryan,

I believe I had talked to you yesterday. Sorry to hear about the issues after mapping the input. Please send us an email at customerservice@outlawaudio.com

We will then send you both an HDMI hotswap procedure, as well as a HDMI reset procedure.

Tech support had me do a reset on the 975 and an HDMI reset. Now when I swap the HDMI cable to the TV from the Oppo to the 975 HDMI out, audio starts working. When I move it back to the Oppo, audio stops working.

Tech support continues to research the problem.

Just for grins, what happens if you route a single Oppo output through the 975? (leave all Oppo settings at "auto".

If you connect an HDMI cable from the output on the 975 to a spare port on the TV, HDMI audio will work.

To summarize, the configuration that woks is:

HDMI Video out from the Oppo to the TV
HDMI Audio out from the Oppo to the 975
HDMI Out from the 975 to the TV

can you use the ARC channel to return the audio signal back to the 975 from the TV after the OPPO sends the video/audio to the TV. It might eliminate an extra cable. Not sure if the ARC will work on a signal other than something streamed.

The Model 975 is an HDMI repeater device. As with any HDMI repeater device, it needs the connection to a TV in order for the handshaking to complete successfully. This is because the TV in any HDMI connected system is the HDMI sink device and is the device in the system that is most responsible for a successful handshaking.

The HDMI output connection should be made to the TV, in order to have access to the OSD set-up menu.

Regards.
