Cable Risers - Snake Oil or they do improve the SQ? - 08/17/08 09:09 PM

Hello,

I want to ask all of you is you raise the cables to be above the floor and keep them from running along other cables?

Please tell me what you think about cable risers and if they work?

Cable risers are a sham, invented by weak-minded idiots to be sold to gullible, weak-minded idiots.

It doesn't matter where in space a cable is laying, as long as it is not in close proximity to AC mains cables.

Floors, whether wood, concrete or dirt, are not known to be significant radiators of electromagnetic or radio frequency energy. In any event, even if they were, a few inches of spacing wouldn't make much difference anyway.

Now go out and find the most expensive cable risers you can find, buy them, and report back.

My approach to cable management mimics Altec's: keep low voltage cables (interconnects and speaker cables) from laying along power cables. No risers here...

The reason that ICs and speakers cables should not be near power lines is?

EMI. If they run parallel and close together, the EM fields generated by the 120V power can induce hum in analog audio and other assorted interference nasties. I've personally had some speaker hum caused by this, and it was fixed simply by re-arranging some cables. Crossing at right angles instead of running parallel is usually enough to take care of you.

I can attest to gonk's reply. I was getting a hum in my speakers for years never really knowing why. I just thought it was a characteristic of the amp i own. I ordered the 990 last month and hung the power cords on one side of my system and all the signal cables downt the other side, wolla...no more hum!
